The Green National Committee has appointed two delegates to represent the Green Party of the United States at the upcoming meeting of the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, where the party’s application to rejoin is expected to be considered.
The national organization separately approved both Lily Benavides of New Jersey and Howie Hawkins of New York this week in expedited votes to accommodate the timing of the meeting, which is scheduled for late November in Mexico. GNC members selected Benavides in an unanimous 64–0 vote and Hawkins, the party’s 2020 presidential nominee, in a 48–18 vote. In both cases, there were three abstentions.
Benavides and Hawkins were nominated for the role by the party’s International Committee, which initially introduced the proposals earlier in the month. According to the proposals, their nominations received unanimous support from participating committee members.
The Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, commonly abbreviated as FPVA, is an international organization that promotes cooperation among Green parties throughout North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. It is one of four regional organizations that comprise the larger Global Greens network.
The GPUS previously participated in the federation for more than two decades before formally withdrawing in 2022 following disagreements over the political positions of some other member parties, as well as the decision of the U.S. Greens to seek membership in the São Paulo Forum, another coalition of predominantly left-wing political organizations. The party also ended its membership in Global Greens as a result of the withdrawal.
However, the national organization voted to reverse that decision in July, approving a proposal to seek reaffiliation with the federation. The same proposal also rescinded the party’s earlier decision to seek membership in the São Paulo Forum, which it said had never formally taken effect.
The party’s application to rejoin the federation is expected to be the first item of business at the meeting. If the GPUS is invited back into the federation, the same proposal further directed the International Committee to similarly pursue renewed membership in Global Greens.
