The Pennsylvania Pirate Party has ended its membership in the Pirate National Committee, withdrawing from the organization due to inactivity and failing to meet the neccesary national membership requirements.
Pirate National Committee Captain Jolly Mitch Davillo shared news of the Pennsylvania affiliate’s decision to withdraw in an October 21 statement, relaying a letter from Pennsylvania representative Drew Bingaman he received days earlier.
According to Bingaman, the party ended its membership in the national organization effective October 18, citing a failure to meet requirements under the party’s bylaws. That included having an active website, holding current meetings, and maintaining its social media presence. He said that while the party has active members throughout the state, specifically in western Pennsylvania, it has been unsuccessful in bringing them together to reorganize.
“Until that happens, we cannot meaningfully take part in the PNC’s work, and it would not be fair to the other member parties to hold a seat we cannot fill,” Bingaman said.
Bingaman further said that Pennsylvania withdrawing from the national organization doesn’t mean the state party itself has entirely ceased to exist, adding that he will continue to oversee the website domain and maintain its essential organizing documents, which he will transfer to new leadership when reorganization next takes place.
“As a personal aside, I want to thank Drew for all he has done to help build the Pennsylvania Pirate Party, and thank you Drew for maintaining the heartbeat for whoever wishes to come and help assist and rebuild the PAPP,” Davilo said in response.
Pennsylvania’s departure from the Pirate National Committee brings the national organization’s membership down to seven, amongst them Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Texas. It is the second Pirate affiliate to leave the national committee this year, following California, which was demoted to observer status in June.
