MA: Greens and Independents Reaching Out to Disaffected Voters

From Friends of Jill Stein, via TPID:

WAQUOIT — Members of the Cape’s Green-Rainbow Party are hoping to cash in on voter dissatisfaction this fall by presenting candidates who present an alternative to the status quo.

Roughly two dozen people attended the party’s regional convention yesterday at the Moonakis Café in Waquoit, where activists expressed contempt for the two major political parties. They also rallied around Peter White, the independent candidate for the 10th Congressional District, and Jill Stein, the Green-Rainbow candidate for governor.

Stein, who lost to former Gov. Mitt Romney in 2002 and fell to William Galvin in the 2006 race for secretary of state, spoke about everything from casinos to campaign finance reform and told supporters the time is right for a third party to succeed in Massachusetts.

“The powers that be are quaking in their boots that we’ll have a chance to get to the microphone,” Stein said.

The Green-Rainbow Party is committed to environmentalism, social justice and grassroots organizing. Party members have a strict policy of nonviolence and are vocal opponents of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yesterday, Stein criticized corruption and backroom deals by both Democrats and Republicans, railed against casinos, and focused on finding funding for new green energy businesses that can create jobs and help protect the environment.

She said the recent surprise election of U.S. Sen. Scott Brown highlights frustration among voters, adding the only way to fix a broken politic system is to offer a viable alternative to the status quo.

    Donn

Myself and other progressives have ben booted off of Common Dreams.
Our “crime?” Pointing out what the Obama Administration is, before the election.

    Just a heads up..

  3. Dear Friend of Common Dreams,

You’ve probably never heard of Ela Bhatt.
I hadn’t either, until the other day. I came across her name as I was flipping through the pages of a book called Voices of Protests: Documents of Courage and Dissent.

Ela organized and unionized self-employed women in India in the 1970’s – which as you might imagine, took a lot of courage and determination. In the book she recounts how her detractors asked her how she could call her organization a ‘union’ if its members weren’t united against an employer.

‘Against whom are you going to fight,’ they wanted to know?

And of course, the countless laws and policies that exploit the disenfranchised and perpetuate social and economic injustice – here at home, and around the world. It’s a long list, and one that rightfully stirs up a lot of anger.

But what Ela knew, and what we as a community of progressive activists have always understood is this: If we want real reform, we have to harness our brainpower, our energy and our courage – to work for something.

At Common Dreams we’ve always been clear about what we’re working for: Policies that promote the common good. Ideas that make the world better for everyone, not the privileged few.

Just as you rely on us every day to continue our work – to bring you the best mix of progressive news and views, to provide a sense of community – we rely on you to support our work.

I believe the progressive community – our community – grows stronger every day. Not just in numbers, but in determination. Conviction. Imagination.

And like Ela, I believe we have to fight fearlessly for those progressive values and policies that we hold so dear.

I also believe that the stakes have never been higher.

If we’re going to turn this country around, we have to stand up to the forces that undermine our democracy and our society. We need to act, and act boldly. We need to bring to the table not just our anger and our discontent, but our solutions.

This strategy will not work. The election of Brown was enough disaffected voters switched party vote-from dem to rep-to give victory to rep Brown. Voters are not going to switch from dem/rep tp Green or Libertarian in significant numbers.

  5. Crappy [compost] icon selection: Kansas Sun Flower as badge of honor for Effeminate Gardeners!

Crappy local leader ship: Patricia LaMarshe ‘Don’t Vote for me!’ and recycled Obama Mommas on Jill’s staff and effort! (No decent third party election administrators in North, North, East, East USA ???????????)

Lack of embracing the three bladed electricity producing wind mill as 21st Century Peace Sign and Parks mega star Teddy Roosevelt and the 2012 Centennial is coming up.

(There is a reason why Washington State third party has the Elk icon and the Green Mountain [Vermont] Progressive has the Bull Moose!) ]
