In New York state, a third party without automatic ballot status is actually an independent political body.
The deadline to file independent nominating petitions for statewide office for the 2010 elections in New York was today. You can find a link to the official count: here. So far, the NYS Board of Elections has seven candidates listed as having filed petitions for Governor:
APP Anti-Prohibition Party: Kristin M. Davis
FDM Freedom Party: Charles Barron
GRN Green Party: Howie Hawkins
LBT Libertarian Party:
(The BOE lists two candidates as having filed – Sam Sloan and Warren Redlich)
RDH Rent is 2 Damn High Party: Jimmy McMillan
TXP Taxpayers Party: Carl P. Paladino
[Update] TEA Tea Party: Steve Cohn
There will be a period when petitions can be challenged. A decision of the BOE and/or a lawsuit may decide which Libertarian name is on the ballot. Warren Redlich was the candidate chosen formally by the New York State Libertarian convention.

I just don’t see how it matters that Cohn’s TEA party is on the ballot. Most of all the quote unquote official TEA Party organizations actively support Republicans. Can’t we assume at this point that any TEA party that isn’t cross-endorsing Republicans is a hoax?
And if the teabaggers were anything but traditional Republicans in different clothing they’d just join the LP.
It’s not like the people in this movement were all born in 2007. They have a lot of the same views Republicans have always espoused. They’ve just gotten sick of nobody listening to them and so they’ve adopted a new advertising campaign.

Peg C, your whole comment is rediculous. So what!? The TEA Party movement is a bunch of bull to begin with. It’s a major problem for individuals trying to form real coalitions. It’s mostly pretty standard Republicans who realize the party has looked bad in the wake of W trying to cleanse something that woul be considered broken in a sane world with any long-term memory.
Steve Cohn is a stalking horse for Cuomo – no one in the NY Tea Party movement has vetted him, has met him or knows who he is, except that he has mostly DEMOCRAT ties. The TEA line on the ballot is a HOAX. It has no tie to the Tea Party groups whatsoever who have been vetting candidates and doing volunteering for various candidates for months.
The only valid Tea party-related line on the ballot is the Taxpayers Party line, which a number of us TP group members voted on. Carl Paladino has won this line with double the number of required petitions.
Be aware there are fakes and frauds running as TEA party candidates who are no such thing and that line is not related to the Tea Party. VERY interesting that they all appear to acknowledge that you have to be perceived to be conservative and a Tea Party-approved candidate to win this year, isn’t it? Even in this deep blue state! (The only one who can’t conceivably make the TP claim is Cuomo, which explains the stalking horses, probably funded by Obama’s Stimulus STASH.)

I have been involved with many Tea Parties in NY ALL of whom would be opposed to a tea party “party” line No one I know including those in Westchester have ever hear of the “TEA” party I an most others I know assume this is a bogus attempt to fracture votes
I was informed by the NYS Board of Elections that a decision as to the validity of the petitions would be presented to the Board making the final decision on September 2nd. Having this many candidates file for the Governor’s office in New York State is nothing new as this happens all the time. It’s after the Board culls the field and the final determination of who actually makes it is what will be interesting in this year of the anti-incumbant. (I’ve learned never to put up to much of a detailed list on my site as to who is actually running because after the determination is made, I usually have to end up erasing half of it.)
The Libertarians and Greens usually make it. One of the Socialist parties usually makes it too, so I’m really surprised none of them filed this year. (There still may be a day or two lag time before they show up on the list.) Jimmy McMillan made it last time quite comfortably (and even did fairly well for a third party candidate in the last election) so he has a good chance of being in. Charles Barron was off the radar and came out of nowhere. Whether he makes it or not will depend on how hard the Democrats want to keep him off. He is a former Black Panther that is claiming racism exists in every corner and that the Democrats (read Cuomo) have abandoned the African-Americans living in New York. This could pull a lot of votes away from the Democrats. The Dems will probably not challenge Kristin Davis as they don’t want to remind anyone of the connection to her and Elliot Spitzer. (But that doesn’t mean she will have the necessary amount of signatures to make it either.) Paladino will make it. Steve Cohn is another off the radar filer and again, there is no guarantee he has the number of valid signatures. Whoever is running or affiliated with his campaign, please go to my website and contact me (e-mail address at the bottom of the site). I need info on him such as campaign websites for people to go to.
For people out there affiliated with any of these campaigns, once the list is determined for the general election, I will be sending a list of questions on positions that I hope they will answer. It’s one way of getting publicity when the media tends to ignore you.
I realize this may be obvious to some, but it’s worth mentioning that these candidates are for Governor . . . certainly other candidates for other offices are to be included when just saying ‘candidates’.
