Larry King to Moderate Third-Party Presidential Debate

Free and Equal has announced that Larry King will moderate the debate featuring alternative party candidates for President, to be broadcast live on Youtube on October 23. Free and Equal notes:

“Larry King, host of Larry King Now on Hulu.com and Ora TV, will serve as moderator for its special 2012 Presidential debate. Hosted by Free and Equal, this debate will take place on October 23 at 9:00pm EDT at the Hilton Chicago. Ora TV, Russia Today, and the Free and Equal Elections Foundation will broadcast the debate live on the Internet.”

“The Free and Equal Elections Foundation has assembled a diverse group of ballot-qualified candidates in order to offer a truly multi-partisan debate for American voters. With sponsoring organizations spanning the ideological spectrum from The Nation to The American Conservative, it is clear that both the left and right in this country agree that the two-party system is broken. Free and Equal’s debate will be the type of open, honest, and solutions oriented discussion that the American people deserve.”

The debate will include Gary Johnson, Libertarian candidate; Jill Stein, Green Party candidate; Virgil Goode, Constitution Party candidate, and Rocky Anderson, Justice Party candidate. All 4 have confirmed that they will participate.

“This is a truly exciting opportunity,” said debate moderator Larry King. “I have interviewed every US President since Nixon, and lest people forget, I helped usher Ross Perot into the national conversation during the 1992 presidential contest. I appreciate the importance of providing a platform to those with real alternative visions for our country’s future.”

I’m more interested in hearing from someone who knows for sure.

“Anyone know for sure whether the second Free and Equal debate on 10/30 is a go or a rumor?”

Probably a rumor (just like the first closed Free & Equal beauty pageant that was rumored in advance to be a debate).

PeterO: “Larry King is probably the highest-profile, highest-credibility journalist who was willing to do it.”

Absolutely. I don’t see how someone can have a problem with him moderating the debate.

That said, how many people actually watch his Web show? I don’t know the answer to that, but maybe he’s just desperate for interesting content. I didn’t even know he had one. Interviewing them on his CNN show would’ve been fantastic, but he probably wouldn’t have done it then.

    Agreed.

Larry King will bring much more gravitas to the debate than its ever had before.

Larry King is a horrible choice. He’ll be to busy plugging grape juice and claiming the debaters are “the best to come down the pike”. This event should be taken seriously and I don’t think the folks organizing this care all too much if they hired Larry King.

Anyone know for sure whether the second Free and Equal debate on 10/30 is a go or a rumor? Saw it online and passed it on but not seeing it on Free and Equal website. Was I misled?

Sadly, Larry King is probably better known than any of the candidates in the debate. On the bright side, his participation has attracted some attention that the debate deserves but wasn’t getting: Associated Press did a story on it, for instance.

Between this and the interview he recently did with GJ, my impression of Larry King has really improved. He’s certainly better than that British nitwit they replaced him with. Too bad he’s not really relevant anymore (which is probably why he feels free to do these things).
