The AP reports New York’s independent mayor Michael Bloomberg “is coming to Minnesota to help the fortunes of the state’s Independence Party. Party Chairman Craig Swaggert says Bloomberg is the featured guest for a fundraising breakfast and is scheduled to give a policy speech afterward. Both July 25 events are planned for Minneapolis. Swaggert says he expects to draw combined crowds of 600 to 700 people. The party expects to charge $100 per person for the fundraiser and lesser amounts for the speech.”

If Bloomberg runs for Governor of New York in 2010 on the Independence Party line I think he would beat the Democrat Governor Paterson and whoever the Republicans run.
I wonder if this means if Bloomberg runs for reelection he will do so on the Indepndence Party line in NY? I realize theya re two different parties. Maybe Bloomberg can help the NY party shake off the Newmanite/Fulaniite cult?
Before I became a real libertarian, I really really liked the MN Independence Party and wished that the national LP was more like it.
Now, more than ever, I wish the MNIP would grow national. Maybe some of the LP usurpers could join. They would be useful allies on many issues without debauching our purity.
It’s nice to see that Bloomberg’s flirtation with an independent run wasn’t just that. That he appears to be interested in helping out like-minded third party and independent candidates.
Good on him.
