A situation described as an “improper mass removal” of Libertarian Party of Idaho board officers was shared on the Libertarian National Committee’s public business list on Tuesday, prompting a motion by the national committee to recognize one of the two cohorts.
According to Region 1 Representative Adam Haman, there was an alleged improper mass removal of all Libertarian Party of Idaho board officers, including Chair Jay Sorensen, during a recent proceeding that “allegedly lacked due process and proper notice.” At this time, the matter is expected to be taken up by the Libertarian Party of Idaho’s Judicial Committee.
In response to the situation, Haman moved that the Libertarian National Committee recognize the party cohort under Jay Sorensen until the state party’s Judicial Committee has had the opportunity to weigh in. Sorensen was chair of the Libertarian Party of Idaho before news of the event was made public. The motion has since gone to a ballot by the national committee.
The Libertarian Party of Idaho experienced a similar situation in 2022 when a conflict arose between board officers, leading then-party chair Robert Imhoff-Dousharm to remove several officers without proper notice, according to critics at the time. This action prompted a petition by the State Central Committee seeking the expulsion of Robert Imhoff-Dousharm and his wife, Jennifer Imhoff-Dousharm, which was ultimately upheld by the party’s Judicial Committee. During this time, the Libertarian National Committee also adopted a motion recognizing the cohort under Sorensen as the official board of the Libertarian Party of Idaho. Details around the current situation are still unfolding; however, Independent Political Report was able to locate an alleged agenda detailing specific business items and the date of the event, as well as identify the Libertarian Party of Idaho member selected to be the new interim party chair following the meeting.
According to a screenshot shared by one X user who claimed it was the agenda of the State Central Committee reorganization meeting, the event occurred on Monday, June 17, and included a vote to affirm the board elected at the 2023 and 2024 conventions, a repeal of all previous membership suspensions, and an item that reads “suspend memberships:” without listing specific names, among other things. The agenda further states that the meeting was chaired by the Kootenai County Libertarian Central Committee Chairman.

Additionally, an X post on Monday by Kootenai County precinct committee member Jennifer Luoma congratulated party member Joseph Evans for becoming the interim chair of the Libertarian Party of Idaho. Evans has also since updated his X bio to depict himself as the current chair.

Evans: The electors of the state of Idaho elected a single precinct committeeman, Jennifer Luoma. It then falls on her to organize her county central committee, per state law. This process was interrupted by individuals identifying as the state executive board. However, it was completed, and documents were filed with the county and the PAC created with the state.
There was a necessity for the State Central Committee to convene, considering the hostility of certain individuals.
Notionally, they did not remove anyone since there was no executive board to remove, with the power of the precinct committeeman process having been returned to the precinct committeeman to start the process anew.
[At this point, Evans shared a recording of a May 31, 2024, meeting that he explained occurred three days after the expiration of the authorities of the precinct committeeman process.]
Evans: There are some significant differences, as the State Central Committee, for which I am the interim Chair, strongly supports Chase Oliver and Mike Ter Maat as the nominees. We support parental access to all forms of care their children may need. We are also strong supporters of open borders, #DefendTheGuard, and self-expression.
