Modern Whig Institute Announces Return from Extended Hiatus

The Modern Whig Institute announced this week that it has returned from an extended hiatus, sharing details on several new initiatives currently underway.

In a statement published May 27, the Institute explained that its pause in activity was due to health challenges among senior leadership. While no longer an electoral organization, the Institute began as a political party before rebranding as a policy-focused nonprofit. It now advocates for the principles of “representative government, ordered liberty, capitalism, due process, and the rule of law.”

According to the organization, it originated with the Modern Whig Party, an electoral group first organized in 2007 by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The party fielded a limited number of candidates and later merged with several ideologically similar organizations, eventually contributing to the formation of the Alliance Party in 2019.

Following the Alliance Party’s establishment, the Modern Whig Party dissolved, but not before transferring its remaining assets, including its name and online presence, to the newly created Modern Whig Institute.

The Institute said it is discontinuing its official publication, The National Gazette, and launching a new project titled the Modern Whig Leader. The group described the new publication as a “major upgrade” from prior efforts, which were primarily hosted on Substack. The Leader will serve as a freestanding “house newspaper” open to the general public, though only paying members will be able to comment or participate in affiliated Whig roundtable discussions.

The Institute is also revamping its website and online presence, with updates expected to coincide with the release of the new Modern Whig Leader. This includes a transition to a new web domain after the group lost access to its original one. As of this article’s publication, the new website is functional, and the Institute anticipates completing all renovations by the end of the week.
