Former Green Party Presidential Nominee Cynthia McKinney Endorses Kentucky Libertarian Jeremy Todd for Congress

Libertarian Jeremy Todd has picked up the endorsement of former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, the Green Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, in his campaign for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.

The endorsement was announced last Thursday, October 15, by William Pounds, a former gubernatorial candidate who most recently sought the Arizona Green Party’s nomination earlier this year. Pounds has a history of working alongside McKinney on various social and political causes. He has also openly referred to himself as her protégé and says he previously chaired an effort to nominate former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and McKinney for president and vice president in 2020.

Speaking for both of them, Pounds wrote on X that he and McKinney were “beyond thrilled” to endorse Todd’s congressional campaign, sharing a campaign graphic announcing her support. Todd later acknowledged the endorsement, thanking both McKinney and Pounds. He further praised the show of support from the two as a sign of building coalitions across ideological lines.

“When you put America First and Americans First, cool things happen. Coalitions are built and maybe, just maybe things change forever,” Todd wrote. “A radical right wing Libertarian can earn support from all sides, if you put America First.”

McKinney represented Georgia’s 11th and 4th Congressional Districts as a member of the Democratic Party for a combined six terms before leaving the party to become the Green Party’s presidential nominee in 2008. Much like her time in Congress, her presidential bid largely focused on racial and economic justice, universal single-payer healthcare, environmental protections, and opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—the latter position also shared by many Libertarians at the time.

She ultimately appeared on the ballot in 31 states and the District of Columbia alongside vice presidential running mate Rosa Clemente. The ticket received 161,797 votes nationwide.

This is the second endorsement from a former presidential candidate that Todd has announced in recent weeks. Prior to McKinney, he announced the support of former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, the Libertarian Party’s 1988 presidential nominee and later a Republican candidate for the presidency in 2008 and 2012, who said in his endorsement that he believes Todd will continue the work of outgoing Republican U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie.

Todd faces Republican Ed Gallrein, who defeated Massie in the Republican primary, and Democrat Melissa Strange in November.
