“The Green Party of Suffolk is outraged to discover that Suffolk County has been using Tasers against its residents,” said its chair Roger Snyder. “It is inconceivable that Suffolk has continued to use Tasers after residents have died after being tasered.”

Snyder outlined the Green Party’s plan to protect the lives of Suffolk residents: “In line with its pillar of nonviolence, the Green Party of Suffolk demands Suffolk County seek out ways to avoid the use of easily abused and potentially lethal Tasers. As an immediate step, the Green Party of Suffolk calls on the county to put a moratorium on the use or purchase of any Tasers. In the long term, the Green Party calls on the county to train the police in nonviolent methods of resolving situations.”

The existence of Taser use in Suffolk County was brought to light by the death of a Darryl Bain after he was tasered by the Suffolk Police.  According to Newsday, Bain is the fourth person to die after being tasered by Suffolk Police.  Amnesty International USA has found that 350 people died in the United States and Canada after being shot by Tasers since June 2001.

The heavy-handed use of Tasers in Suffolk is striking.  According to Newsday, “Suffolk police have 669 Tasers, and supervisors hope to arm most patrol cops with one.”  The large number of Tasers has created an explosion in their use in Suffolk.  Newsday also reports “Tasers were used 44 times in 2006, 53 times in 2007, 65 times in 2008 and 146 times so far this year.”

The dangerous nature of Tasers is well-known.  Amnesty International released a report on December 16, 2008 that labeled Tasers as “Potentially Lethal and Easy to Abuse.”  Angela Wright, US researcher at Amnesty International and author of the report said that “Tasers are not the ‘non-lethal’ weapons they are portrayed to be. They can kill and should only be used as a last resort.”

The Amnesty International report showed that abuse of Tasers is widespread.  The Amnesty report “found that 90 per cent of those who died after being struck with a Taser were unarmed and many did not appear to present a serious threat. Many were subjected to repeated or prolonged shocks – far more than the five-second “standard” cycle – or by more than one officer at a time. Some people were even shocked for failing to comply with police commands after they had been incapacitated by a first shock.”  The report found that Tasers were used against persons with “medical conditions such as seizures.” It also found that “police officers also used Tasers on schoolchildren, pregnant women and even an elderly person with dementia.”

The Green Party is an alternative party to the Democrats and Republicans. The four pillars of the Green Party are: Nonviolence/Peace; Grassroots Democracy; Social and Economic Justice; and Ecological Wisdom. You can enroll in the Green Party by checking the box marked “Other” on the voter registration form and writing in the word “Green” on the line next to it.

    Green Party
Are they related to Amnesty International

They sound the same and uninformed

They should first ask to ban illegal drugs and see how that goes

  2. Tasers Kill

    To “dailylarrna” Dave:

You don’t seem to have good reasoning abilities. Why would the Green Party have to take a position on “illegal drugs” and banning them?

If the drugs are “illegal”, they are BANNED by LAW.

See. You don’t have a working brain.

“Former Nevada LP State Chair shot by police, is in critical condition”

Maybe just maybe gun violence should be addressed first?

The way you said “should be addressed first” makes me believe that you have not done anything lately, and you are projecting it on the Green Party.

Having one, timely press release on a horrific event, does not take away the previous work the Green Party has done. There is no order to fighting injustice.

The other issues that you have raised are most likely addressed in the GP Suffolk platform and/or the connected Green Party of NYS platform and/or the 10 Key Values of the Green Party.

  5. Tasers Kill

    To Kimberly Wilder:

“dailylarrna” is a TASR shareholder, awash in losses from the poor performance of the stock of Taser International, the manufacturer of the stun guns which are clearly killing innocent victims, at the hands of retributive law enforcement officers, long before these innocent victims ever are charged with a crime or have their cases adjudicated in a court of law. For taser victims, the use of the stun gun is the Judge, Jury and Executioner. Around the world, over 500 victims have died, shortly after the electro-executioner stun gun was used.

It is useless to argue or try to “inform” this “dailylarrna” person. As I just demonstrated with his “illegal drug” comment, “dailylarrna” does not have great reasoning abilities. Why would he call for your Party to take a stand on “illegal drugs and banning them”, when those drugs and their use is already AGAINST THE LAW?

    Good luck.

End the drug war, make the currently illegal drugs legal, and end the restrictions on gun ownership currently in place against people who are not government employees of one sort or another and/or criminals. Then there won’t be any problems with so many people dying by gunfire, although the Taser shareholder/employee/sock puppet “dailydarrna” is apparently of the opinion that guns go off by themselves.

    Ding Ding Ding

We have a winner. As for dailydiarrhea well enough said.

As an aside, while I was running street medic during the RNC in St Paul last year, the local “heroes” in blue threatened to taser my son. He had been running street medic during the Rage Against The Police concert and was trying to get a lawyer to help me, when the police had me surrounded.

I had just treated an Iraqi vet who was maced by them. The guy had just returned from Iraq.

Yes, I have the paperwork in to process a lawsuit.

As for dailydiarrhea well enough said???

you know what I would like
a little more peace in the world

    lose the guns
    lose the drugs
    lose the violence
and there won’t be a need for police or tasers

  9. paulie

Simpleton is more like it. “Lose” how?

Prohibition does not work. Stop creating the conditions for violence with prohibition.

Alcohol prohibition caused violence, and so does prohibition of other drugs now. Alcohol prohibition did not get rid of alcoholism, and prohibition of other drugs now does not end the problems of drug addiction. But, it does create a whole host of other problems.

Gun prohibition does not work either. It’s a first step towards tyranny. Countries that disarm their general population often go on to become dictatorships which murder thousands or millions of their own people. They also leave them as sitting ducks for violent criminals, abusive police, and abusive police who are also themselves violent criminals.

Need for police with tasers? There’s no need for them now, nor was there ever.

“Bain is the fourth person to die after being tasered by Suffolk Police. ”

Did all of these murders happen just recently?

    d. eris,

I think I emailed you about this but have not heard back.

I believe if I recall correctly at one time you offered to write for IPR….still interested?

  12. The Last Conservative

You’re all wrong. Tasers and guns are both necessary for world stability. We must return to the society of the Middle Ages, where all freedom was restricted as the empires, the church and the feudal lords crushed the serfs and forced them into subservience. The conservatives and libertarians of today are all a bunch of liberal commies; we must return to the true conservatism of absolute monarchy. And with new technology such as tasers and guns, they can exert even greater control over the masses, which makes me happy.

  13. d.eris

paulie, we haven’t been in email contact, maybe you sent to the wrong address, or are thinking of someone else? I’ve never gotten in touch with anyone about writing for IPR, though I’ve thought about it, and am interested.

Be careful what you wish for; we seem to be well on or our way to getting it.

    My mistake.

Cool, you’re signed up. I’m sending you an email……..let me know if you have any problems.
