If Murkowski prevails, as now seems likely, she will be the first US Senator elected by write-in since Strom Thurmond in the 1950s. Incumbent Murkowski lost in the Republican primary to “TEA party” candidate Joe Miller. There was then some speculation that she might run as a Libertarian, but the Libertarian Party state committee voted against it and she denied that she had been interested.
