Kent Williams is one of the most powerful independent politicians in the United States, only ranking behind people like Mayor Bloomberg of New York City, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. He was formerly a Republican, but was stripped of his party affiliation by the state Republican executive committee because he voted with all 49 Democratic representatives to make himself Speaker of the House. Williams ran for re-election this year as an independent and has easily won re-election.
However, speaker Williams says that when his term is up, he will not run for re-election as Speaker of the House. With the Republicans picking up 14 seats in the house, William’s odds would be fairly long anyway.
