Disgruntled Latinos Ponder Tequila Party

The entire article at the Las Vegas Sun is worth a read, but here is an excerpt.

Latino leaders in Nevada and nationwide are quietly debating whether to sever their traditional Democratic ties and form an independent grass-roots political group.

The idea, born of frustration over the party’s inaction on immigration reform and fears that as a voting bloc they’re a political afterthought, Latino leaders have discussed the idea among themselves locally and in conference calls with colleagues across the country.

The unlikely model for the movement they would like to launch is the Tea Party — not in substance, of course, but in its grass-roots organizational style. Acknowledging the source of their inspiration, Latino leaders have dubbed the proposed movement the “Tequila Party.”

These Hispanic leaders have noticed that while the Tea Party has had spotty electoral success, it has called attention to its concerns and values and put the establishment on notice.

“I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but there’s talk,” said Fernando Romero, president of the nonpartisan Hispanics in Politics, Nevada’s oldest Hispanic political group. “There’s discussion about empowerment of the Latino vote.”

The article also recounts failed attempts by Hispanic activists to create their own third parties.

In the late 1960s, the Puerto Rican Young Lords Party emerged in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Modeled after the Black Panther Party, the group used confrontational tactics to call attention to the struggles of immigrants in the barrios. In the 1970s, the Mexican-American La Raza Unida Party sprung up in the Southwest. The party gained city council and school board seats in Crystal City, Texas, where it began, and ran candidates for governor and U.S. Senate. But the party’s high-profile candidates lost, and the movement struggled to gain traction nationally.

DO NOT WORRY ‘BOUT DEMOCANS AND REPUBLICRATS. THEY ARE FINE HONEST PEOPLE AND WILL TAKE CARE OF THE AVERAGE CITIZEN AS IF THEY WERE ‘FAMILY’:

The memorial will bring several political figures, including Sen. John Kerry, who led the Democratic presidential ticket in 2004 that included John Edwards, and Vicki Kennedy, wife of late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

A number of Democrats from North Carolina will attend, including Gov. Beverly Perdue and U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan.

Edwards’ oldest daughter, 28-year-old Cate, is scheduled to give a eulogy along with two of her mother’s longtime friends, Hargrave McElroy and Glenn Bergenfield.

John Edwards is not scheduled to speak.

Jennifer Palmieri, who was a senior adviser during John Edwards’ presidential campaigns, said the funeral is open to the public because Elizabeth Edwards always insisted on open campaign events — much to the consternation of staff who wanted to control access. She never wanted tickets issued, even free ones.

The National LP does NOT use Instant Runoff.
It uses Elimination Runoff for all that.
Vote, eliminate bottom one, revote, eliminate bottom one, and so on, til a majority is reached. That’s completely different.

  3. The California Libertarian Party and the National Libertarian Party uses IRV for chair and presidential elections.

The California LP also uses a form of the Sainte-Lague to elect about five state executives.

I’d like to see a statement from the Tequila Party (putative party?) on what they stand for. Article sez “immigration reform” several times and also mentions “education reform”, but what exactly?

    MMP
I’m not aware of the Libertarian Party using Instant Runoff for anything (alls I can think of is a single straw poll done in one state last year). I’d like to know, what does the LP use IRV for?

  6. A Female/Paulie for President/Vice President [Info. Not Avail./Tequila]?

Paulie, would you like to test market this in 2011? All you have to do is allow me to self-nominate your name as a “Minister” in Central California with the Tequila Party, then we can see if you win .99% plus one vote of the total votes cast to see if it will fly.

I know you’d probably be able to “take over”, but that’s OK, at least you’d be in a coalition with the Constitution Party and American Independent Party.

We can really use you, the Pot Party might wish to be in coalition with your name.

Don’t worry, you may also still help the Libertarian Party, switch parties in the parliament, or help whomever you wish.

I hope the Libertarians will be involved in this.

    I like the name 🙂

  8. Rather that was a five-winner, or five member district. Five winners=1/6th of the votes, plus one vote for the first FIVE names. My bad.

  9. […]The threshold is around 83.34%[…]

Meant to write the *total satisfaction level* is 83.34%.

The threshold is actually 16.66% plus one vote in a six-winner district.

  10. Brian December 3, 2010

Tea Party is not grassroots. It’s an example of astroturfing. This effort reeks of the same trend. I applaud and support this effort if it truly is grassroots, however, the involvement of the “Don’t vote” guy running those ads out in Nevada would suggest this is a conservative ploy to separate Latinos from the Democratic camp.

  11. Please allow me to briefly explain how a two or more district election works under the single transferable vote (STV) Sainte-Laugue system.

    It is not IRV(instant runoff voting), like the Libertarian Party uses, which is a single winner system, for single winner district power grabbing egotists, where 50% plus one vote is the threshold.;

    The Sainte-Lauge STV System

When two candidates are elected under Sainte-Laugue STV, the threshold is 33.33% plus one vote for each candidate, for a total of 66.66% plus two votes. After all the names with the lower totals are eliminated the lowest totals first, as they have the least chance to win, the two attaining 33.33% plus one vote wins, and the third person garnered 33.33%, but not plus one vote did not win. Note that one vote switching over to the loser would have elected them.

It was the closest you can come to a tie, and one vote broke the tie.

In a three person race, the closest you get to a tie as all candidates with the lowest totals are eliminated , and the ballots which went to those name is single transferred to the next highest name…is a four-way tie at 25% each.

So, the first three to garner 25% plus one vote are the winners, the threshold being 25% plus one vote.

A four-member district, the threshold is 20% plus one vote, with a satisfaction level of 80% plus four votes.

80% plus four voters are satisfied, because they elected one of the four representatives.

A six member race, the threshold is 16.66% plus five votes.

    The threshold is around 83.34%.

So you see, the more seats that get elected, the more people are satisfied with the results.

In a 100-member district, the first 100 names that garner 1/101ths (or .99%) of the votes, plus one vote, are elected. The last person with 1/101ths but not plus one vote, didn’t get elected.

There the satisfaction level is 99% plus 100 votes.
