Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a Registered Independent

Justice Sonio Sotomayor, who is the newest member of the Supreme Court, was appointed by President Barack Obama, a Democrat. However, as Richard Winger has reported, Justice Sonia Sotomayor has been registered as a voter in D.C. as an independent.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is registered “independent.” She is registered to vote in the District of Columbia. In recent decades, most U.S. Supreme Court Justices have been residents of northern Virginia, and Virginia does not have registration by party. But some justices have lived in Maryland, which does have registration by party.
