Following the success of the first training weekend in October 2015 in the Washington, D.C. area, we’re pleased to announce the next session will be held Feb. 12–14 on the shores of San Francisco Bay, California. We’ve booked training facilities at Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport Waterfront, just a few minutes’ drive to the spectacular sights and sounds of San Francisco and the Golden Gate.

LP Activist Training by Libertarians, for Libertarians is a weekend of activist training designed to inspire you and give you the tools you need to be a successful Libertarian activist, candidate, campaigner, and party leader in your state.

Sponsored by the National Libertarian Party, this workshop features seasoned Libertarian experts with a proven track record of success who will show you the ropes on everything from Libertarian campaigns to public speaking, from media interviews to organizing and expanding your LP affiliate.

As far as I know, none of us with the San Francisco LP, or the San Mateo LP — SF’s airport is actually located in San Mateo County — were contacted to ask for our input about dates or locations, or even to give us the heads-up about this possible event.

When I read on the Libertarian National Committee list a message from Wes Benedict that they were considering holding a training session (possibly along with an LNC meeting) in San Francisco, it naturally attracted my attention since that’s where I live.

I sent a message to Wes and members of the LNC volunteering that if they’d let me know the date, times, and any other requirements they’d want for a venue at which to hold this training, I’d try to find a free or low-cost location for them so they wouldn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars of LP members’ money on a conference room in a fancy hotel.

This is the response I received:

I was asked to lead a training session again but I also, like David Colborne, chose peace in my household instead. For those of you without a belief in the holy day of Hallmark Valentines, this will be a very worthwhile weekend. I encourage you to attend.

    Dear Muslim Republicans,

I share your outrage and hurt at Donald Trump’s recent comments and policy suggestions about Muslims. I share your outrage and hurt that he still is polling well among Republicans. I share your outrage and hurt that we should even have to discuss such matters. But obviously we do.

Freedom of religion is one of our most sacred American values, protected by our Constitution. Never should someone be disparaged, profiled, or have their rights infringed upon because of their religious faith. Republicans like to talk a good game about our Constitution but, clearly, many are making an exception when it comes to religious liberty. This is quite sad and it is this kind of double standard that has caused so many liberty-loving people to leave the Republican Party and find a better home in the Libertarian Party.

If you have not previously considered the Libertarian Party, I encourage you to do so now. We are an extremely diverse group of people who are passionate about liberty…about all rights, of all people, all the time. We do not denigrate or disparage any group. We respect the humanity of all people and their rights to make their own decisions about their lives. Simply put: Libertarianism is the idea that every person has the right to pursue happiness in any way they wish as long as it doesn’t hurt people or take their stuff.

I know many of your families have fled repressive regimes abroad in search of peace, prosperity, and liberty in the United States. I hope you have found good things here. No country is perfect and recent weeks have reminded us of that. But I maintain that, despite our imperfections, the United States is one of the best places on the planet for liberty-loving people. Our Constitution does protect your rights, and it will continue to. And Libertarians nationwide always will stand with you also, advocating your rights and the rights of all people to live freely.

Friend, if you find that the Republican Party continues to disparage you, please consider a home in the Libertarian Party where we respect all rights, of all people, all the time.

    Nicholas Sarwark
    Chair, Libertarian National Committee

    Commentary:

There is then the problem becoming focused. On one hand, Trump is fear mongering to pander republicans who believe that Muslim immigration should be halted to protect the homeland. The Libertarian Party embraces all people, regardless of national origin or creed, two of the equal protection aspects in the US Constitution. It is true that the Koran, written 1000 years ago, was based upon the spread of Islam by the sword of Mohamed. Muslims do have in a tiny percentage a brutal ideology towards Jihad and Infidels and the spread of Islam, while the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful and tolerant of others. The United Sates is a melting pot. All new comers should assimilate into Americana, of liberty, democracy and free speech. The goal is not to ban Muslims, but to assimilate them, as good citizens, for those who want to come to the US, into Americana culture, so as to teach Constitution, Liberty, Freedom, to make Muslims love America for what it is, a land of liberty. Trump’s bombastic pronouncements do not solve problems, but are counter-productive to solving ethic and religious problems, and are inherently divisive, pandering and fear mongering, sowing seeds of social strife. The better approach is to screen violent persons, but welcome, teach and assimilate those who want to live in the land of freedom and liberty.

Hmmm, how can the party educate others on “winning”, fundraising, membership growth, etc., when it has no recent history of success?

The date they chose proves the cluelessness. What person with a life/spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend/prospect is going to choose an LP training event over making a loved one happy? Even more anti-socials?

Maybe we should change our name to the Anti-Social Party: Join us so we can hate you too!

  6. Jill Pyeatt December 15, 2015

Ted Brown will be speaking about candidate recruitment.

  7. David Colborne December 15, 2015

I’d love to attend, but the odds of me remaining married after blowing off Valentine’s Day to go to a LP training event are… not strong.

I don’t know – I might try to push my luck anyway.
