Matt Johnson Named New Chair of the Libertarian Party of Florida

The Libertarian Party of Florida announced on Thursday that Matt Johnson, its former Region 2 Alternate Representative for the Libertarian National Committee, has been named as its new chair. Johnson succeeds Josh Hlavka, who recently resigned from the position for personal reasons.

“We are thrilled to announce that Matt Johnson has stepped into the role of Chair,” the Libertarian Party of Florida’s Communications Committee stated in an email. “Matt brings a wealth of experience, having served as our Communications Chair, Region 2 Alternate Representative on the Libertarian National Committee, and Chair of the Volusia County affiliate. His tireless work for liberty and our party make him an outstanding choice to lead us forward.”

In addition to his involvement in the party, Johnson is a two-time candidate for public office. Earlier this year, he ran for the Florida legislature, earning 2.8% of the vote in a three-way race in the 29th district. In 2022, he secured 35.2% in a two-way primary race for the DeLand City Commission. Johnson also founded Volusia Parents for Freedom in 2021, a local group created in response to allegations that an area elementary school teacher had compelled a student to wear a mask.

The party also expressed appreciation to outgoing chair Josh Hlavka for his service. In a statement, the party extended its “heartfelt gratitude” for Hlavka’s commitment to advancing liberty in Florida. Hlavka was first elected chair in 2023 after serving as the party’s vice chair. According to the Libertarian Party of Florida, his resignation was prompted by plans to relocate to Arizona.

The former chair’s last name is spelled “Hlavka”. Hlavka was also the 2024 LNC Convention Credentials Committee Chair.
