The Libertarian Party of Florida announced this week that Matt Johnson, its Region 2 alternate representative to the Libertarian National Committee, has been named its new state chair. Johnson succeed Josh Hlavka, who recently stepped down for personal reasons.
“We are thrilled to announce that Matt Johnson has stepped into the role of Chair,” the party’s Communications Committee wrote in an email on Thursday. “Matt brings a wealth of experience, having served as our Communications Chair, Region 2 Alternate Representative on the Libertarian National Committee, and Chair of the Volusia County affiliate. His tireless work for liberty and our party make him an outstanding choice to lead us forward.”
Aside from his involvement with party leadership, Johnson is a former Libertarian candidate for public office. Earlier this year, he ran for the Florida’s House District 29, where he earned 2.8% of the vote in a three-way race. Prior to that, he earned 35.2% in a two-way primary campaign for DeLand City Commission.
Johnson is also the founder of Volusia Parents for Freedom, which he created in 2021 as a local response to allegations that an area elementary school teacher had compelled a student to wear a mask.
The party also expressed its appreciation to outgoing-Chair Josh Hlavka for his service. In its statement, the party extended its “heartfelt gratitude” for Hlavka’s commitment to advancing liberty in Florida.
Hlavka was first elected chair in 2023 after serving as the party’s vice chair. According to the Libertarian Party of Florida, his resignation was prompted by plans to relocate to Arizona.

Thank you for the correction, Nolan’s Duty!
The former chair’s last name is spelled “Hlavka”. Hlavka was also the 2024 LNC Convention Credentials Committee Chair.
