Green National Committee Approves Plan to Modernize National Digital Infrastructure

The Green National Committee has approved a proposal to overhaul the Green Party’s digital infrastructure, adopting Basecamp as a project management platform for internal work and Google Groups as a replacement for the party’s current email list system. State affiliates and caucuses will be given the option to opt in to the new platforms.

The measure was first put forward in November by a coalition of the Green Party’s Steering Committee, the Young EcoSocialists Caucus, the North Carolina Green Party, and the Illinois Green Party as a way to address the organization’s decentralized patchwork of digital tools and the loss of support facing some systems. Among them is the party’s Mailman listserv service, which is scheduled to shut down in early January and could disrupt internal communications if no alternative is in place.

“To spark a genuine organizational renaissance—recruiting new members, engaging volunteers, and elevating our collective capacity— we must consolidate our digital platforms and standardize the way we organize work,” the proposal reads. “A unified, modern, and accessible platform will simplify onboarding, preserve institutional memory, and give every member— across generations and tech comfort levels— a clear, consistent place to participate and contribute.”

The national committee officially adopted the proposal this Monday in a 60–8 vote, with six members abstaining. Following the recommendation of a task force composed of Steering Committee members, representatives from the Michigan Green Party, the Young EcoSocialists Caucus, and the party’s Media and Diversity committees, the party will now transition to Basecamp. As part of that change, the party will allocate $3,600 from its 2026 general budget to establish an account with the platform.

Moving forward, Basecamp will be used by the Green Party’s national staff, the Steering Committee, and its various national committees, while caucuses and state parties will be able to decide whether to participate. Google Groups will also serve as the party’s primary email list platform for official national business. The existing voting system used by the Green National Committee will remain unchanged.

The same task force will oversee implementation, training, and technical support through the end of 2026. Transition efforts are scheduled to begin January 5, with trainings and informational sessions planned ahead of the rollout, including the formation of a volunteer Basecamp support team.
