Libertarian Party Calls Trump December Address “Premature Victory Lap”

The Libertarian Party has issued a formal response to President Donald Trump’s December Address to the Nation, calling it a “premature victory lap” designed to make the country feel optimistic about his administration while failing to offer solutions to concerns the party says have continued to persist.

In a December 18 statement, Steven Nekhaila, chair of the Libertarian National Committee, took issue with several of Trump’s remarks, including his assessment of the economy, his approach to monetary policy, and what Nekhaila views as gaps between his rhetoric and policy follow-through. His response follows a Wednesday night address in which Trump discussed economic improvements under his administration, praised tariffs as a tool to protect American industry, and reiterated plans to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell with a figure supportive of lower interest rates.

During his address, Trump also pointed to border enforcement efforts, proposed lowering prescription drug costs, and promoted what his administration has branded as a “Warrior Dividend,” a $1,776 stipend intended for active-duty service members and veterans. He further addressed ongoing global instability, depicting his administration’s foreign policy as one focused on restoring American strength while ending international conflicts.

In response, Nekhaila likened Trump’s economic messaging and support for appointing a new Federal Reserve chair partial to lower interest rates to “a temporary morphine shot,” arguing it would mask larger institutional problems while worsening inflation and malinvestment. He also pushed back on Trump’s comments on border security, medication costs, and trade policy, stating the address failed to offer substantive immigration reform, did not revisit prior commitments by the administration to reclassify marijuana under federal law, and promoted tariffs that the party says would harm American consumers and businesses.

Nekhaila further criticized Trump’s foreign policy claims, noting that while the president discussed his proposed dividend, he neglected to address the continued deployment of National Guard units overseas. Nekhaila specifically referenced deployments in Syria and cited the recent deaths of two Iowa National Guard members at the hands of ISIS, while also raising concerns about escalating tensions in Europe and around Taiwan, as well as a newly announced blockade involving Venezuela, as evidence that global conflicts were expanding rather than receding.

“This was a premature victory lap, designed to make Americans feel better about the administration, but the reality we face is nothing like the optimistic picture painted tonight,” Nekhaila said. “Dovish Fed policy, a looming war with Venezuela, and passing the ‘big beautiful bill’ will not fix America.”

Nekhaila instead called for a shift toward Libertarian policy priorities, including sound monetary policy, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and what he proposed as “a gutted Congress” as immediate first steps.

I don’t understand what “a gutted congress” means. A gutless congress perhaps?
