Libertarian National Committee Elects Seven to Convention Oversight, Fills Audit Committee Vacancy

The Libertarian National Committee met for a special meeting this past weekend, where it elected seven party members to its Convention Oversight Committee and filled an outstanding vacancy on the Audit Committee from an earlier vote held this summer.

LNC members met virtually on August 22, with much of the meeting devoted to filling the two committees. Both elections used approval voting, allowing members to support multiple nominees, with available seats going to the highest vote-getters who also captured a majority of the vote.

Region 9 Representative Alex Flores, Region 4 Representative Mimi Robson, and national Secretary Jonathan McGee were elected to the three Convention Oversight Committee seats reserved for LNC members, each receiving 14 votes. All three were elected on the first ballot from a field of six candidates.

Paul Darr, Michael Seebeck, Addison Patrick, and Brittany Kosin were elected to the committee’s four non-LNC seats, also on the first ballot. Darr led the 15-candidate field with 15 votes, followed by Seebeck with 14, Patrick with 13, and Kosin with 11. On both ballots, members also had the option to choose None of the Above. The LNC then selected Darr to chair the committee, with 15 members backing Darr and one each supporting Flores and Kosin.

Under the LNC Policy Manual, the seven-member Convention Oversight Committee is responsible for overseeing preparations for the party’s national conventions. Its responsibilities include recommending sites and dates, reviewing major contracts, and addressing budget and programming needs. The seven will serve until 90 days after the close of the convention they’re responsible for addressing.

The LNC also returned to an Audit Committee vacancy left unfilled during an earlier round of voting in July, when Region 3 Representative Dustin Coffell and Jake Porter were elected to the committee’s other two seats. During that vote, no other nominee for the second non-LNC seat received the majority support required for election, resulting in Porter being the only such member elected at the time.

Alexa Maffei and Travis Lerol tied with eight votes each on the first ballot, ahead of Kat McElroy with four and Bryce Thon with two, prompting a second round between Maffei and Lerol. Maffei received eight votes to Lerol’s five on the second ballot to take the remaining seat.

The Audit Committee consists of one non-officer LNC member and two people from outside the national committee, all selected by LNC members who do not currently hold national office. As a result of that stipulation, Chair Evan McMahon, Vice Chair Amanda Griffiths, Secretary McGee, and Treasurer Douglas Knebel were not eligible to vote.

The committee is responsible for selecting an independent auditing firm, determining the scale and scope of annual reviews of the party’s accounting records and processes, and helping the LNC interpret those findings and address any major concerns. All Audit Committee members will serve through the end of the LNC administration that appointed them or until their successors are selected, whichever happens first.
