Emily Salvette, chair of the Michigan LP, writes in the Detroit Free Press in opposition to the new Michigan law banning all texting while driving:
Will this law increase public safety? Probably not. It is intended to deter distracted driving that is reckless. But reckless driving is already illegal. Police can already issue tickets to motorists whose distracted driving poses a clear danger to others.
The ban applies whether or not you are driving recklessly. It applies if you are stopped at a stop light, in a traffic jam or waiting for a train to pass. It outlaws the responsible everyday behavior of millions of motorists with no clear benefit in return….
Will this new law reduce your freedom? Absolutely.

Second, it is a valid argument, because texting while driving is a serious public hazard, no less than driving while intoxicated.

Thanks for the great Constitution Party story.
It’s true that the Constitution Party isn’t really mentioned here, but texting is an important issue which can allow the Constitution Party to reveal itself towards what it was meant to be, a socialist party. Texting is both a sin according to the best interpretations of the Bible, and an antiproletarian deviation under the best interpretations of marxism. Therefore, the socialist caucus of the Constitution Party supports the text ban.
Emily Salvette is still welcome to see the light and join the Constitution Party. Maybe she will even run for office and become the first Constitution Party US senator.

Ah, Emily Salvette, my old friend when I was in the LP in Michigan. She is one of the best spokespersons for the LP I have ever known.

That doesn’t appear to be an argument against Emily Salvette’s argument.
And, for my money, I’d prefer not to be rammed period, regardless of the gender of the driver or the cause of the ramming. But that’s just me. 🙂
