The current issue of The Militant reports that “for the first time in more than 30 years, the Socialist Workers Party presidential ticket will appear on the ballot” in Delaware. On June 30, “supporters filed papers to place the slate of Roger Calero for president and Alyson Kennedy for vice president on the ballot. Paul Baldwin from the Delaware State Commissioner of Elections Office said the candidates would be posted on the office’s Web site the next day. Hundreds of Delaware voters registered SWP over the last four years to meet state requirements. Baldwin told the press that the party had certified more than the required number of registered voters to be placed on the ballot.”

The Militant understated the truth. This is the first time the Socialist Workers Party, or any of its candidates, has ever been on the ballot. It tried and failed in both 1972 and 1976. In 1976 the Socialist Workers Party and the Libertarian Party filed a joint lawsuit against Delaware, which lost. In 1978 Delaware eased its ballot access law voluntarily.
