Upcoming La Riva appearance: ‘Immigrants and the struggle for equality’

Party for Socialism and Liberation presidential nominee and PFP presidential hopeful Gloria La Riva will be appearing in Fresno, California this Sunday to meet with and listen to locals concerning the rights of immigrants.

According to the event announcement, which is apparently only available in Spanish, La Riva has “participated for over 25 years in pro-immigrant struggles throughout California.” La Riva is herself the daughter of a Mexican-born immigrant, and as such “knows the struggles and everyday difficulties that the immigrant community faces, and the urgent need that the immigrant community be guaranteed equality.”

The event will be held at 453 N Fresno St (local office of Comité Pro Uno, an immigrant advocacy and support group) at 2 PM, and is sponsored by both the PSL and PFP.

As a member of the Peace and Freedom Party, I am thrilled that Gloria La Riva is coming to Fresno. My guess is that her appearance here will contribute to broad-based community support for her should she receive the party’s nomination for President.

I wonder abt the PSL takeing over the PFP? It’s been tried many many times. Though, the PFP has been a part of attempts to create a national, multi-tendency, democratic socialist party several times in the past. But, the PSL is very doctrinaire Marxist-Leninist, very vanguardist, I would hate to see the PFP’s heritage be usurped by vanguardists.

That said, if she was the only non Dem/Rep on the ballot in my state I would vote for her. And that said; I’ll vote for Bob Barr before I would McCain or Obama.

I noted that another former Workers World Party presidential candidate, Monica Moorehead, is supporting Cynthia McKinney.

I am pretty impressed by her as a candidate, even though our worldviews are radically opposed. IMO, the bigger picture is that if she succeeds in getting the PFP nomination then the PSL will play a big(ger) role in the PFP’s efforts to go national. Likewise with Moore and the SP, but as an outsider I see that as the weaker option.

The Fresno County Peace and Freedom Party welcomes Gloria La Riva to Fresno and is pleased that she has agreed to spend time with us. While the other candidates for the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party have so far ignored requests to visit the San Joaquin Valley, Gloria has shown a real interest in our community. We hope that this leads to a real groundswell of support for Socialism, the Peace and Freedom Party, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

I like La Riva. Her radicalism is refreshing when compared to certain other candidates.
