Scott Peterson, a member of the Libertarian Party of Texas, has won a district seat on the Rosenberg City Council after prevailing by three votes in a runoff election that took place earlier this month.
Peterson defeated Alicia Casias in the June 13 runoff for the city’s 3rd District seat, receiving 247 votes, or 50.31 percent, while Casias received 244 votes. The position was an open seat after incumbent Hector Trevino opted to retire at the end of his term. The Rosenberg City Council will hold a special meeting to certify the results later this month.
The runoff followed an initial round of voting held May 2, when four candidates originally sought the nonpartisan seat. Peterson came out on top in that first round with 252 votes, followed by Casias with 224 votes. Elizabeth Scott received 47 votes, while Anthony Campos received 17 votes. As no single candidate received a majority, the race advanced to a runoff between Peterson and Casias.
The 3rd District seat is one of four district-based positions on the Rosenberg City Council, which also includes the mayor and two at-large members. The council operates as the city’s legislative body and is responsible for tasks such as approving the municipal budget, setting the tax rate, and addressing issues related to capital improvements and long-term planning.
Peterson is a member of the Libertarian Party of Texas, where he currently serves as its Affiliate Support Specialist. The state party also celebrated his win on social media following the runoff, writing, “No vote is a wasted vote.”
Rosenberg Mayor William Benton also acknowledged the result over the weekend, calling it “one of the closest elections that I recall in Rosenberg.” He congratulated both candidates on their campaigns and said Peterson is expected to be sworn in at Rosenberg City Hall on the evening of June 23.
