Kinky Friedman Endorses Dog For Texas Governor

Kinky Friedman’s political history has been all over the map: a Republican run for Kerrville Justice of the Peace in 1986, an independent run for Governor in 2006, and finally a Democrat run for Governor and then Agriculture Commissioner in 2010.

Nevertheless, Friedman continues to explore ever corner of the political spectrum. Last month, the revered humorist informed the Texas Libertarian Party at its convention that he was a Libertarian in spirit, launching blistering critiques of both major parties.

Yet his colorful politics may have taken a bizarre twist. Yesterday, on the steps of the Texas Capitol, Kinky Friedman endorsed Woodrow for Governor. Woodrow is a once-stray dog. The effort is part of a fundraising drive for an animal rights group, Austin Pets Alive! (NOTE: I have not heard if the campaign turned in enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.)

Despite these recent activities, Friedman himself claims he is done running for office.

Texas: Great opportunity of alternative politicians and political activists in the Lone Star State to back a living legend.

With all his faults, I still applaud the bickering reformers (Deform Party of Texas), the infinite debating society via LPTx, the imploding ‘Constitution’ movement for their high profile commentary on 2006 Friedman.

Oops, you Texans were ‘All Hat, No Cattle!’ and nearly worthless! West Coasters John Dennis Coffey and Donald R. Lake were much more beneficial than you local jerks.

You get the governance that you deserve! Jerks! Yes that means Sandra Madison, Beverly Kennedy, and the Fosters!

My main gripe on Woodrow is that she is not a three legged Basset Hound! Three legged pets are such an inspiration to us two leggeds. And a Basset is always an asset!

Kinky is a long term animal shelter advocate and still my favorite Jewish Cowboy ………

    A 4-legged governor?

Incumbent Perry? Democratic challenger Bill White? Naaah. Former candidate for governor (and ag commissioner) Kinky Friedman plans to endorse a once-homeless dog in the governor’s race.

The Woodrow for Governor campaign is a fundraising tool for Austin Pets Alive!, which said Friedman will endorse the dog on July 6 at the Texas Capitol.

Woodrow does seem to pay homage to Friedman’s campaign with this slogan: “How Ruff Could It Be?”

I spoke with Kinky in Austin. He said that there is no doubt in his mind that the leadership in the Texas Democratic Party was against his Ag Commissioner run because of his previously having run as an independent. I asked him if maybe some of them had their hands tied & wanted to support him but couldn’t due to the power structure of the Democratic Party. He said that he felt they were against his candidacy from the start & wouldn’t listen to him about the possibility that he could attract voters outside of the traditional Democratic Party base.

Kinky also stated his support for Robert Nowotny, who is running as an LP candidate for State Representative in District 73. Kinky & Nowotny worked together on a movie called Palo Pinto Gold.

I am almost positive that Kinky would have won a statewide office for the Democrats. I don’t think anybody else on their ticket will win the seat in the end.
