Open Thread for January 2014

Here we are, not only starting a new month, but a new year. Thanks to everyone for their contributions to IPR throughout 2013! Here is a thread dedicated to anything you might wish to tell us about, whether it’s about third parties, or Independents, or something else entirely.

Here is the video I’d love to start the New Year with.

  2. Concerned Libertarian Citizen January 30, 2014

Hello my friends. I would like to apolomogize for my actions. I apologize to New Federalist. I apologize to Paulie. Please forgive me. I want to be reinstated.

  3. paulie January 30, 2014

What makes you think they haven’t asked? Texas LP is on the ball, they run hundreds of candidates every time, have full time staff, dozens of active affiliates and raise 6 figures in some years. Of course they have asked.

I still don’t see how someone who lives in a state for 5 years plus is a carpetbagger.

Senator Clinton was a carpetbagger, though. I first typed crapetbagger and that seems correct as well.

  4. Electoral Watch January 30, 2014

It’s the Texas LP’s job to at least ask. I’m just providing some ideas. Obviously, if no one is interested but losers and carpetbaggers, that’s what they’ll have to nominate.

  5. paulie January 30, 2014

John Mackey might be another good choice if the Texas LP is looking for a non-loser candidate.

Another person who has better things to do. You forgot to ask these people on your wishlist whether they would be willing to do it, which is a necessary part of the thing.

John Mackey might be another good choice if the Texas LP is looking for a non-loser candidate.”

Every Libertarian should be disappointed by John Mackey’s refusal to change Whole Foods policy about not allowing people to gather signatures on petitions there. One of the biggest obstacles to ballot access is petition circulators not being able to find places with sufficient foot traffic to ask people to sign petitions. During the 2012 petition drive to place Gary Johnson and James Gray on the ballot in Alabama, two petition circulators were threatened with arrest for attempting to gather petition signatures in front of a Whole Foods in the Birmingham area. Rather ironic considering that John Mackey donated $5,000 to Gary Johnson for President.

American Freedom Party: Pro-White Rallies Organized Across The Globe For March”

We do cover the AFP, but I see nothing in the article that mentions the AFP or its candidates. Pass.

  11. langa January 29, 2014

Forget organizing rallies. If the AFP really wants to get more media attention, they should heed my suggestion and change their name to the Caucasian Racial Advancement Party (CRAP, for short). It would also accurately describe their beliefs, in more ways than one.

Great news about Lee Wrights dropping out. Hopefully the Texas LP can recruit a functional non-carpetbagger candidate for Governor, along the lines of Kinky Friedman, Alex Jones, or Ron Paul.”

I’d love to see either Ron Paul or Alex Jones run for Governor of Texas, or better yet, run on the same ticket for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Texas, but I don’t think that either of them are interested in running.

  14. paulie January 29, 2014

5 years living in Texas =/= carpetbagger, and any of the people you mentioned running as LP candidates for Governor of Texas is a pipe dream. Looks like it’s probably going to be Kathie Glass again.

claim the teen unemployment is driver by minimum wage law changes has two problems
    (1) it is actually driven by recessions

    Some of both

    (2) few teenagers before the current recession were paid at ore below the minimum wage.

Bt many are paid close to the minimum wage, while others might have jobs if it weren’t for minimum wage.

    1/26/’14 – Spence
    >”There’s no such thing as a libertarian politician. It’s a contradiction in terms”.

You simply have too narrow of a definition for libertarian or politician, or both.

I would suggest the opposite. If one is a “libertarian”, one must necessarily be active in politics.
    Otherwise one is dysfunctional.

    politician:
“One who is actively involved in politics in order to influence public policy and decision making.”

“Claims that antiabortionist etc etc etc Rand Paul is a Libertarian are totally whacko.”

Precisely. He leans more libertarian than most within the Republican Party, but Rand Paul is no Ron Paul, and he’s no libertarian.

  24. George Phillies January 26, 2014

To his credit, Paul emphasizes the same point himself.

  25. George Phillies January 26, 2014

Claims that antiabortionist etc etc etc Rand Paul is a Libertarian are totally whacko.

  26. Spence January 26, 2014

Yes, but you do not need a political party gang or candidates for that, those are counterproductive to the goal. There are thousands of ways to actually help get us there…the LP is not one!

    http://dollarvigilante.com/blog/2014/1/21/libertarian-party-moves-us-away-from-freedom.html

“….Since 1982, “libertarian candidates” have come and gone, leaving no trace except the draining of energy, ideals and cash from the movement. Millions of man hours have been wasted along with hundreds of millions of dollars. It has done nothing more than move libertarianism farther away from freedom,

At this point in conversation, I am often called idealistic and unwilling to consider real-world strategies such as running for office. The criticism is a sleight of hand; it takes a moral objection and tries to pass it off as a strategic one. Moreover, the “real world” jab is a strange one. I pursue a broad range of strategies that have proven to work in the world. They include counter-economics, parallel institutions, grassroots movements, community-building, education, non-violent resistance, moral suasion, self-sufficiency, non-cooperation, civil disobedience…and voting with your feet. None of those strategies sanction the state or require anyone to become part of it. All of them liberate individuals, here and now.

The idealism jab is equally strange. It comes from people who believe politicians with incredible power will not abuse it; with a straight face, LP advocates assure me that successful politicians will rush to surrender their hard-won authority, relinquishing the prestige and paycheck that attends power. The state can be reformed by our good intentions, they protest; apparently, “power corrupts…except for libertarians.” And I’m the naïve unrealistic one?

The LP’s desire to join the state has been disastrous for the movement and it has pushed back the horizon of freedom in America. …”

Meanwhile, the Theocratic Constipation Party is moving ahead with a merger with the American Freedom to Fascism Party to create a new White Christians Only Party. At the same time the Green Party has issued a press release that says “Yes it’s true; we have been Communists from Day One and we no longer feel like we have to hide it.” Lee Wrights shows Libertarian Party candidates the way by dropping out; all LP candidates follow suit!

  27. Warren Redlich January 26, 2014

My response to the NY Times commenter:

“The goal – to strip government down to its barest essentials, namely, maintaining security and arbitrating contracts between private individuals – would see the end of developed government as we know it. Corporations would have a free hand. There’d be no public parks or libraries, no environmental regulations, unequal taxation that favored the rich, no FDA or department of health or education, no gun laws at all, and so on.”

Yes, yes, yes! Except for the part about unequal taxation favoring the rich. We have that now, but we would equal non-taxation in the dream land of minarchy.

Nor would corporations have the free hand you describe. Corporations only exist because of government. In an anarchic world there would be no state sponsorship of the corporate form.

Libertarians do not favor unbridled corporate power. We would end the favoritism corporations currently enjoy from both major parties.

  28. Warren Redlich January 26, 2014

From a comment in the NY Times hatchet job on Rand Paul:

“Libertarianism, like Communism, is one of those political philosophies that looks good on paper but is totally unworkable in practice. It might work on a very local level, in a commune or a small town or village, but as a guiding principle for a modern, mass nation-state with hundreds of millions of citizens it is little more than a gateway to anarchy.”

    If only. 🙂

William, I hope you can get around to taking a look at the Moderate Party eventually, even if in a few months. If anyone else is interested in reviewing it, please post here.

  31. paulie January 21, 2014

    Money down the drain…

It will save us about 5k/month compared to rent, eventually get us out from under having to make monthly payments and many people are donating to this project who would not be donating any equivalent amount to LP otherwise, which takes care of the down payment. A new round of fundraising once the deal is final and we are moving in will help pay down the remaining payments quicker.

I have received a report that the LNC Chair has signed a purchase agreement on 1444 Duke Street. The other party has yet to sign; then there are inspections, due diligence, etc etc etc.

That’s somewhat backwards. The other party has signed an agreement to sell and we have 60 days to due diligence to make sure the property and the deal are to our liking. If they are then we go ahead and buy. If not, there’s no penalty for backing out.

Do you know what could we have rented a similar property for?

The watergate is costing a lot more on a monthly basis, is poorly maintained and is doing nothing to ever get us out from under making 5-figure payments every month.

A townhouse on Capitol Hill that we almost bought 25 years ago was about 140k back then. In the meantime we have spent several million dollars on rent.

  32. paulie January 21, 2014

Yes, I think a better announcement could have been made regarding this situation. I believe I was initially supportive of his campaign, but I don’t believe I ever promised a donation because the second half of the year is always tougher for me to get all our bills paid.

Well, good luck to Lee and Thomas Hill, as I know they both have other outlets for activism.

Richard makes good points, but Warren is the owner here and his views ultimately prevail so there is that. I don’t agree with his decision to remove parties such as PSL, IAP and maybe some others but it’s his call.

  42. Deran January 19, 2014

Earlier this week there was a forum in NYC, “Socialism at the Ballot Box”. Representatives from Socialist Alternative, International Socialist Organization and Jacobin (a non-aligned socialist monthly out of Brooklyn) magazine talked, and it was moderated by a former Green Party municipal alderman in Connecticut.

  43. Jed Ziggler January 18, 2014

From Richard Winger, in an email to the IPR email list:

Just as there should be objective standards for which presidential candidates get into the presidential debates, and objective standards to determine which parties appear on the ballot, IPR should have objective standards to decide which groups are bona fide political parties. Looking at various party web pages, just to get a feel for that party, is no substitute for having objective standards.

Furthermore, there should be one set of standards for parties that are national organizations, and a separate standard for parties that are only organized in just one state. In fact, there should be two sets of links, one for each.

The standard for a party organized in just one state would be that the party is ballot-qualified in its one state, and ran at least one candidate for partisan office in the preceding general election. The standard that a party must have had at least one candidate would eliminate many parties in Florida, and the Alaskan Independence Party, and the South Carolina Independence Party, and the South Carolina Labor Party, all of which seem inactive even though they are still on the ballot.

The Working Families Party is an awkward fit, because there is no nationally-organized Working Families Party, yet clearly the various state Working Families Party work together, so I would list the Working Families Party as a national party despite its lack of any national party officers.

Parties organized in one state that would be included are: Arizona Americans Elect, California Peace & Freedom, Connecticut Independent Party, Delaware Independent Party, Natural Law in Michigan, Independence in Minnesota, Conservative in New York, Independence in New York, Progressive in Oregon, Independent Party in Oregon, Moderate in Rhode Island, Progressive in Vermont.

Standards for a nationally-organized party should be: (1) if it existed at the time of the last presidential election, it had a presidential candidate who was on the ballot in at least two states; (2) if it hadn’t existed at the time of the last presidential election, that it is now ballot-qualified in at least two states, or working on getting on the ballot in at least two states, either doing a party petition, or a candidate petition; (3) or, if it doesn’t meet either standard, that it had candidates for Congress on the ballot under its own name in at least two states at the last congressional election.

So, the list of nationally-organized parties, at this time, would be: Libertarian, Green, Constitution, Peace & Freedom, Working Families, Justice, America’s Party, Party for Socialism and Liberation, Reform, Socialist, Socialist Workers, Objectivist, American Third Position which is now called American Freedom, Socialist Equality, 1787 Party.

Perhaps, to eliminate parties that meet the nationally-organized standard via the last presidential election but which have gone defunct, such as Objectivist, parties should be removed from the list if they had no candidates in the following midterm year election.

This is just off the cuff and still needs work, but my strongest point is that there should be separate categories for nationally-organized parties and one-state parties.

  44. Deran January 18, 2014

I think “Socialist Alternative” is what is meant, and not Socialist Action. Both are Trotskyist sects, but Socialist Alternative is the more active of the two.

I agree with Mr Redlich that Socialist Alternative is not a political party in the classical sense. I think they think of themselves as a “pre-party formation” (another delightfully obscurantist Leftist term). But if we look back at history, we find the Non-Partisan League in the Dakotas who ran and elected many people to office. And even if the SocAlt takes the position that they are not *the* socialist party, even so, they are running people for office and getting elected to major city councils.

I guess I do agree that even the one state parties that make serious efforts in that state, and run candaites that are not primarially Dem or Reps.

  45. paulie January 18, 2014

As posted to the email list

Justice Party and Socialist Action should IMO definitely be listed. I also don’t think PSL should have been deleted. They run in a lot of states, for multiple offices, and have a very regularly updated website.

The Whigs recently elected someone, so they maybe should have stayed also, although their website seems to almost never be updated, so maybe not..

Minnesota Independence Party has been very significant in their state, but their website has more recently become useless.

The Prohibition Party website was one of the ones deleted last year (or maybe two years ago). They have become insignificant electorally despite their older history and their website was not being updated (I haven’t looked at it recently to see whether that has changed).

The NY Conservative Party has been electorally significant in NY, but they almost always cross-nominate Republicans, so that one is questionable. If we include them we should probably include Working Families. Actually there’s a better argument for Working Families since they are a multi-state party now and expanding to more states.

America’s Party….I don’t think their website was ever useful to us and as far as I know they only run the presidential ticket and only in 3 states. Same with SEP. I would say those two are marginal.

AFP is running candidates in state races so you have a better argument for them.

IAP is significant in Nevada and with Barrie’s race in NM, and are now making a push to organize and/or take over CP and AE chapters in other states (AZ AE has aligned with them, and I think maybe MT and/or OR CP) so I think they should have stayed listed.

Reform Party has been rather insignificant recently, as far as I can tell. I agree that by the standards by which others are not being included they probably shouldn’t be either.

Any recent deletions or proposed additions I missed?

  46. Deran January 18, 2014

This was a disturbing thing I got from the Vermont Progressive Party’s mailing list. An article by John Nichols in which he praises the WFP and the Vermont Progressive Party as essentially having the same plan – be the leftwing of the Democrats.

    http://www.progressiveparty.org/media/2014/democratic-vistas-2014-five-reforms-make-our-politics-matter

Not that long ago there was a major leadership change in the Vermont Progressive Party, and I wonder if this article appearing on the VtPP website indicates the VtPP now sees itself as the same as the WFP?

  47. wredlich January 17, 2014

But I do feel like we’re missing something.

  48. wredlich January 17, 2014

Following this discussion, I removed a couple of parties that did not belong (The Conservative Party of NYS is not what any of us considers a part of the real third party movement, is it?) and I added the Justice Party USA.

Socialist Alternative does not appear to be a party or even to consider itself a party. Look at their website: http://www.socialistalternative.org/

I’m open to others. The e-mail lists are better for me. Busy with other things.

    W

  49. paulie January 17, 2014

I would agree that SA should be added. PSL gets on more state ballots for president than most of the smaller parties. P & F regularly runs slates of statewide candidates in high-population CA. I would also add Justice Party out of Jed’s list for sure. I’m not aware of FSP and WWP being electorally significant.

  50. Deran January 17, 2014

Of the parties to be added, Socialist Alternative is the biggest electoral thing n the US Left in some years. They ran candidates for city council in three states (I think Boston as well as Minneapolis and Seattle?). From what I read they are focused on getting people elected to local office, pushing a few winnable issues taht are both local and national, and then moving their elected people up the ladder. They are not as big as the Greens. But among socialists, of all stripes, Socialist Alternative is the cat’s pajamas. For now. And I’m not a member of SocAlt, nor am I a Trotskyist or even mildly infected with Leninism, but I do think Socialist Alternative is pretty impressive. We’ll see what their plans are for this year.

And as far as who’s involved, you have to give Kshama Sawant credit for getting interviewed or written up in nearly every mainstream meadi outlet in the US. So I would think including a link to the Socialist Alternative would be entorely reasonable.

As compared to the Freedom Socialist Party (good people, not really active in elections), nor the Workers World Party. I also think if IPR links to the Party of Socialism and Liberation (which has never elected anyone to anything and rarely gets more than a couple thousand votes where ever they run). And the Peace and Freedom Party (I am a supporting member) is a grand idea but has not elected anyone to an office in somewhile.

    My two erratic cents.

  51. paulie January 17, 2014

Again…everyone has an opinion….but we have an internal email list for that discussion. Warren does not read the comments here very often and he is the one in charge. Email list is better for the discussion, although of course reader input is fine too.

  52. Jed Ziggler January 17, 2014

Oh I absolutely agree, but if a party has run at least one candidate for major office in, say, the last 4 years, has an active website, and shows no indication of having gone defunct, I think they should be listed. That’s what seems fair to me. Just my opinion.

  53. paulie January 17, 2014

Someone added Darryl’s party without knowing that we had a lot of discussion about this on the email list. There are literally hundreds of groups calling themselves parties, but most of them are actually just websites (if even that).

  54. Jed Ziggler January 16, 2014

Wow. I’m not suggesting anything, other than it seems really odd to me that we link to Darryl Perry’s Liberty Party (not a knock on Darryl, BTW), but not to national political parties that have been fielding candidates in recent years, including our nation’s oldest third party. I didn’t realize adding links to a website was such a big deal.

  55. Warren Redlich January 16, 2014

@Jed: I was asked to respond to your suggestion of adding parties. For each party you propose we add, please describe:

    1. Who are the key players?

    2. How many people are involved? How many members does the party have?

    3. What state(s) is the party active in?

    4. What candidates did the party run in recent elections? What candidates are they putting forward in 2014?

    5. What else about the party warrants their inclusion?

  56. Jed Ziggler January 16, 2014

    Define electorally significant.

  57. paulie January 16, 2014

We had internal discussions about that and decided that only electorally significant parties should be listed. One or two have been added since then by individuals. Most of the ones you list are not electorally significant, but one or two are. You may also want to discuss this on IPR email list.

I’ll post it today. Got sidetracked with some other things yesterday.

I still hope IPR will have a blog post about the 11th circuit decision on Georgia ballot access that came down earlier this week. This victory is more significant than the almost simultaneous Ohio ballot access victory. This was the first time the Eleventh Circuit (which covers Alabama, Georgia, and Florida) had done something helpful for ballot access since 1992. It hugely helps us with our struggle against Alabama and I expect it will be hugely helpful in Georgia as well. But the word isn’t getting out here at IPR, although the Atlanta press has finally covered it.

    go out next week.

    Libertarian Party of Oregon

Pat Dixon moved to add Wes Wagner to the state chairs email list with posting privileges.

Aaron Starr offered a substitute motion, which was unanimously amended to read:

Resolved, that the LSLA Executive Board believes the entire matter concerning the

contested leadership at the Libertarian Party of Oregon is disruptive to the LSLA

    and its purposes,

That the LSLA Executive Board has no desire to inject itself into this internal

conflict and respects the decision of the LSLA State Chairs when they credentialed

the Reeves leadership at its most recent annual meeting,

That we offer both sides the option of participating on the LSLA email list, provided

each participant expressly agrees to not drag their dispute onto that forum,

That it encourages both sides to mediate and amicably resolve their differences, and

That it will maintain this position until the legal process in Oregon is exhausted or

the State Chairs credential a different state chair at its next annual meeting.

The substitute motion became the main motion by a vote of 3-2, which was adopted by a

    vote of 3-2.

    Discussion of 2014 Annual Meeting

The Chair has not had the opportunity to connect with LNC Convention Management

Committee Chair Nancy Neale concerning the availability of space at the 2014 convention

site hotel to host the LSLA.

Set the next LSLA meeting date and time

Without objection, the next meeting was set for 12 January 2014 @ 2000 Eastern Time,

    1700 Pacific Time.

    adjourned.

Let’s also say that I’m not the Matt whose comments were removed, for whatever reason, by Jill.

I think that was the same old troll. Or maybe a different one. Some kind of sicko stuff joking about rape and child abuse this time.

  75. paulie January 2, 2014

Let’s just say that it is, and it’s awesome!

    Works for me 🙂

  78. paulie January 2, 2014

That’s what it looks like, although it could be photoshopped; I don’t know.

Paulie, Is that really art done in the road splash? If so, it is incredibly well done and the artist is very resourceful.

  80. Jill Pyeatt Post author | January 2, 2014

It wasn’t funny the first time, Matt. No need to post it two more times.

  81. Jill Pyeatt Post author | January 2, 2014

Hey, Matt, good thing it’s still early where I am so I can delete your comments–

  82. Jill Pyeatt Post author | January 2, 2014

I see on Facebook that today is Brian Irving’s birthday. Happy birthday, Brian!

  83. paulie January 1, 2014

    Thanks William; I probably will.

    Looking forward to it.

  84. Antirevolutionary January 1, 2014

Thanks William; I probably will. I’d especially appreciate your thoughts about the Moderate Party. May fit better on Saturn’s Repository at this point.

  85. paulie January 1, 2014

If another is added, like your Stolstice thread, we can load that one up with videos, since they cause problem for some people.

I like posting videos in the regular open thread and would rather change the open threads out more often if it causes some people to have problems with load time. But it seems I may be in the minority on that one. Not sure why the month format is sacrosanct; it did not start out that way and only developed as a convenience.

I’ve been tempted to open a thread for articles about anarchy and small ‘l’ libertarians, because some of them are very good. Is anyone interested in that?

    Good idea. Make it so!

  87. Jill Pyeatt Post author | January 1, 2014

I think people expect a new one every month. If another is added, like your Stolstice thread, we can load that one up with videos, since they cause problem for some people.

  88. paulie January 1, 2014

We should keep up the tradition of having an open thread the first day of every month.

Anyone agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Should we have a separate open thread on how often we should post new open threads? 🙂

  89. William Saturn January 1, 2014

You should bring back the old CT every once and a while.

  90. Antirevolutionary January 1, 2014

Oops, went back to my old name for a second.

  91. Catholic Trotskyist January 1, 2014

We should keep up the tradition of having an open thread the first day of every month.

I recently found this site for a group called the Moderate Party after it was posted on the Democrats for Life Facebook page. I think it’s different from the Rhode Island Moderate Party which actually runs candidates.
    http://www.ModerateParty.net

Any thoughts? It’s a bit difficult to follow, but I like their platform (it’s far from being libertarian). I’m not in any way suggesting it deserves coverage yet.

  92. paulie January 1, 2014

Jill comment #1 – We also posted that as an article here More than once, I think.

BTW, open threads are not uncategorized; there is an open threads category.

  93. paulie January 1, 2014

LOL, the last open thread only got 6 comments, you really thnk we need a new open thread already?

I said we can change them out more than just once a month and put up a new one as soon as someone thinks the last one had too many comments or was taking too long to load, but I don’t think anyone said it had too many comments or was taking too long to load yet.

  94. mARS January 1, 2014

Not sure if it’s been mentioned by anyone, but the 1787 party will be having a national convention in September. $20 says it will end up exactly like Americans Elect come 2016. http://www.1787foramerica.org/#!1787-nation/c1ulj

    Found on Facebook:

    HARRY BROWNE’S “A LIBERTARIAN’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS” December 31, 1998.
    • “I resolve to sell liberty by appealing to the self-interest of each
prospect, rather than preaching to people and expecting them to suddenly adopt my ideas of right and wrong.
    • I resolve to keep from being drawn into arguments or debates. My purpose is to inspire people to want liberty — not to prove that they’re wrong.
    • I resolve to listen when people tell me of their wants and needs, so I can help them see how a free society will satisfy those needs.
    • I resolve to identify myself, when appropriate, with the social goals someone may seek — a cleaner environment, more help for the poor, a less divisive society — and try to show him that those goals can never be achieved by government, but will be well served in a free society.
    • I resolve to be compassionate and respectful of the beliefs and needs that lead people to seek government help. I don’t have to approve of their subsidies or policies — but if I don’t acknowledge their needs, I have no hope of helping them find a better way to solve their problems.
    • No matter what the issue, I resolve to keep returning to the central point: how much better off the individual will be in a free society.
    • I resolve to acknowledge my good fortune in having been born an American. Any plan for improvement must begin with a recognition of the good things we have. To speak only of America’s defects will make me a tiresome crank.
    • I resolve to focus on the ways America could be so much better with a very small government — not to dwell on all the wrongs that exist today.
    • I resolve to cleanse myself of hate, resentment, and bitterness. Such things steal time and attention from the work that must be done.
    • I resolve to speak, dress, and act in a respectable manner. I may be the first Libertarian someone has encountered, and it’s important that he get a good first impression. No one will hear the message if the messenger is unattractive.
    • I resolve to remind myself that someone’s “stupid” opinion may be an opinion I once held. If I can grow, why can’t I help him grow?
    • I resolve not to raise my voice in any discussion. In a shouting match, no one wins, no one changes his mind, and no one will be inspired to join our quest for a free society.
    • I resolve not to adopt the tactics of Republicans and Democrats. They use character assassination, evasions, and intimidation because they have no real benefits to offer Americans. We, on the other hand, are offering to set people free — and so we can win simply by focusing on the better life our proposals will bring.
    • I resolve to be civil to my opponents, and treat them with respect. However anyone chooses to treat me, it’s important that I be a better person than my enemies.”
