Libertarian Jason Lebeck Announces Challenge to Speaker Paul Ryan for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District

Janesville (LPWI) — Local resident Jason Lebeck met supporters at the Castlewood Restaurant in Sturtevant, January 16, 2016 to declare his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Wisconsin’s 1st District, at the Southeast Wisconsin Libertarian Party’s monthly meeting. The seat is currently held by incumbent Speaker of the House and 2012 Vice-Presidential candidate, Rep. Paul Ryan.

“The time is right to get new voices into Congress,” Lebeck charges. “Washington appears to be broken, and it will remain broken if we continue to send the same individuals back to DC to represent us. Polls indicate that citizens are unhappy with the job Congress is doing, and we know more people are identifying themselves as independents.” Lebeck points out that Gallup polls show that the approval rating of Congress has topped out at about 20 percent in the last few years, while the number of people that identify as independents has risen since 2008 and is currently sitting above 40 percent.

As a Libertarian, Jason Lebeck seeks to restore our national government to its constitutionally mandated role as defender of citizens’ rights. Jason believes that individuals have the inherent right to pursue happiness as they see fit, without violating the rights of others, with no interference from government.

“People just want to live their lives and not be forced to compromise their moral values or sacrifice their property. I will work to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, regulations that restrict personal liberty.”

Lebeck is in favor of a free-market economy and will work to cut taxes dramatically and transfer many federal programs back to the state and local level. He emphasized that, “by reducing taxes and regulations, which hinder businesses from growing, I believe that the economy will be strengthened.”

Lebeck’s views on foreign policy are aligned with the Libertarian Party’s: non-intervention, peace, and free trade. “We need to stop using our military to be the world’s policemen. I want to bring our troops home. I believe that having our presence in certain areas around the world is agitating conflicts rather than helping.”

“Now is the time for citizens in the 1st District to stand together.”, says Lebeck. “One of my goals during this campaign is to help them see they are not alone politically. I once felt that my vote did not matter because neither party represented me. We can change local, state, and national politics for the better. I am running for Congress to give the people of my district a better choice than the big-money politics which hinder our country today.”

The Libertarian primary election will be held on August 9, and the 2016 general election is on Tuesday, November 8.  Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District includes the cities of Kenosha, Racine, Janesville, New Berlin, and extends from the southern suburbs of Milwaukee to the Illinois border.
