The Wall Street Journal is reporting this evening that President Trump “has talked in recent days with associates about forming a new political party.” The President, who leaves office in a matter of hours, reportedly wishes to call his new venture the Patriot Party.
Any such split in the Republican Party would likely prove devastating to the GOP in the 2022 midterm elections and potentially prompt the biggest reshuffling of the political deck since the 1800s.
However, as former IPR editor Trent Hill noted on Twitter, forming a new party is far from easy. Restrictive ballot access laws erected by Republicans and Democrats over decades would likely frustrate the Trump effort.
People always assume this is easy. It isn’t. Ballot Access laws have been erected over the last 50 years that make this extremely tough, especially in states like Texas, California & Oklahoma. It’s not simple—it requires a sophisticated org, as @rossperot’s group learned. (1/5) https://t.co/6CEOFNXtyB

That’s not to say 3rd parties & independents can’t win. We’ve had Governors (@BillWalkerAk, @LincolnChafee, @GovJVentura ) Senators (@BernieSanders, @JoeLieberman), Congressmen (@justinamash), & lots of state office holders outside the 2 party system. But, this isn’t easy to do. pic.twitter.com/gvMoOnwPBy

He is just the consummate showman. All he requires is a big red nose and large floppy shoes to go with his orange hair and he could be in the circus!
He might be a showman, but a lot of elected politicians would follow him.
Part of me thinks this might be an intimidation tactic to Senate Republicans of “don’t you dare vote for me to be convicted”.
If it did happen, watch the Patriots become the New England Football Team.
“and he could be in the circus!”
The clowns in the district of Criminals are already in a circus-and they hate competition- BOTH sides of the Duopoly Party.
Donald Trump can’t cope with losing. His businesses are in terrible shape, some are failing. He has been badly burned in politics – losing and unable to bully his way to a “win” as he has in everything else in life. . He may have some of the nut jobs around him so worked up that they start something or other, but as it fails, Trump will move away from it. He will have his hands full saving what’s left of his fortune, and he’s at risk of losing his entire fortune. So he may make some noise as he disappears from politics, but things should be a lot quieter now. There will be no serious new party coming from this.
Trump should form a new party, based on his most important public stance. The party should obviously be called the “Sore Losers Party” and members can be Sore Losertarians.
Yes, there are obstacles. But Donald Trump has the guy with the horns backing him. And the QAnon Shaman also likes Trump.
I find I could care less what people think former President Trump is thinking about, or what he may do or not do; He reminds me too much of CAH.
Today I read that some QAnon people know say Biden and Trump are secretly allies, and Trump’s plan is to achieve his goals thru Biden.
Richard: That’s the cognitive dissonance of a conspiracy theorist shown to a T!
Waiting for William Saturn to call this another brilliant, sure-fire idea that is guaranteed to succeed.
In reality, this will be another big fat flop if actually tried, but, if Trump’s taking the lead, it will never be actually tried: https://socraticgadfly.blogspot.com/2021/01/yeah-right-on-patriot-party.html
I’m pretty sure this a negotiation tactic to dissuade Republicans from voting to convict in the Senate.

I disagree. I don’t think Trump engages in such detailed, longterm strategic plans. He usually just shoots from the hip. He has a history of making sudden, big promises, with no followup.
I think this third party idea is just something that popped into his head, and he said it because he thought it would please his base and piss off his opponents.
