Alaska House Poll: Two Republicans, Two Independents (and one Santa) Likely to Advance to General Election

Alaska Survey Research released a poll of 605 likely special election voters in Alaska’s upcoming U.S. House race to replace the recently deceased Don Young. The top 4 finishers in the first round of voting will advance to the general election, where ranked choice voting will determine a winner.

Barring a major shakeup in the race, the top 3 spots appear to be locked down for Republicans Sarah Palin (19%), Nick Begich (16%) and independent Al Gross (13%).… Read more ...

Jacqueline Abernathy Waging Write-in Bid for Texas Governor, Backed by American Solidarity Party

The American Solidarity Party is backing Jacqueline Abernathy as a write-in candidate for governor of Texas this year.

It’s worth noting that the ASP has had some success gaining write-in votes in the Lone Star State, where their 2020 presidential ticket polled 3,207 write-in votes. That was far more write-ins than any of the other filed tickets.… Read more ...

Utah Democrats Join Coalition Backing Evan McMullin’s Independent U.S. Senate Bid

The Utah Democratic Party officially decided not to nominate a candidate to challenge U.S. Senator Mike Lee.  Instead, the Democrats are joining with a coalition of independents (and the United Utah Party) to back Evan McMullin.

During Saturday’s at times chaotic convention at Cottonwood High School in the Salt Lake County suburb of Murray, a faction of delegates put forth a motion to opt against choosing Kael Weston as the party’s Democratic U.S.

Nike Founder Donates a Million Dollars to Independent Candidate for Governor of Oregon

Nike co-founder Phil Knight has now kicked in a cool million bucks to help boost the independent gubernatorial bid of former Democratic state senator Betsy Johnson.

Johnson is banking millions to fuel her campaign and was already polling at 11% in January against a generic Republican and Democrat.

“Without the money and machinery from the two party system, I need all the help I can get to rescue Oregon,” the statement said.

Andrew Halcro Seeks a Short Trip to D.C.

Andrew Halcro served two terms in the Alaska state house as a Republican from 1998 to 2002. In 2006 he waged a strong bid for governor as an independent, winning 9.5% of the vote in the general election.

Now, he’s mounting another bid for statewide office as an independent. Halcro has entered the special election to replace the late Don Young in Alaska’s at-large congressional district, but has decided against seeking a full term.… Read more ...

News & Notes: Cutler Arrest Fallout, Yang on Bill Maher, Libertarian Wins 5% in Legislative Special Election

CUTLER FALLOUT: Eliot Cutler, a former two-time independent candidate for Maine governor, was arrested last month for possession of child pornography.

Numerous politicians have now publicly donated political contributions from Cutler to the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Maine Public Media recently recapped the story and the fallout, noting that the scandal “obscures his novel effect on Maine politics.”… Read more ...
