Illinois Green Party Concludes Presidential Primary, Jill Stein Wins Majority of Delegates

The Illinois Green Party concluded its virtual party-run presidential primary on Saturday, with voting members overwhelmingly selecting Dr. Jill Stein. The primary began earlier in March with eligible voting members having two weeks to cast a ballot.

Voting in the primary officially commenced on March 2, 2024, and was open to all members registered with the Illinois Green Party by that day. To qualify, voters could not participate in another party’s presidential primary. The ballot featured three candidates recognized by the Illinois Green Party as having met the Green Party US Recognition Requirements: Dr. Jill Stein, Jasmine Sherman, and Jorge Zavala. Additionally, voters had the option to write in candidates, provided those individuals were actively pursuing the party’s nomination.

According to final results announced by the Illinois Green Party on Sunday, Jill Stein overwhelmingly won the primary with 84% of support. The option for “None of the Above” came in second with 11%, and Jasmine Sherman in third with 5%. The party did not publicly release specific vote totals.

Illinois will have 19 delegates at the Green Party’s Presidential Nominating Convention scheduled for later this year. Primary delegates were allocated proportionally, with Stein receiving 16 delegates, None of the Above receiving two, and Sherman receiving one.

The Green Party is always seeking qualified, brave souls with grassroots democracy, nonviolence, social justice and ecology deep in their hearts. Unfortunately being vilified and slandered as the standard bearer of a rag tag group of idealist is a hard sell. Howie Hawkins had a hard time rallying the troops. Cornel West baled, thinking he could do better on his own. Jill Stein stepped up again late in the process.

Note that in 2012 Stein helped to dramatically improved Green ballot access and received 3 times the vote of the previous Green presidential candidate. In 2016 Stein again tripled the presidential vote from her previous run. She is on track to beat her previous performance again, in spite of very sparse media coverage.

Pretty unfortunate that the Green Party chooses to replay the “Greatest Hits” album over and over and over again instead of selecting someone new. Every time Stein has run since her first run, she’s received less support each time.
