No Labels, the organization aiming to run a unity ticket featuring a Republican and Democrat, is expected to proceed with plans to select a presidential ticket, according to the Associated Press. The report cites two sources “familiar with the matter.”
No Labels is hosting a virtual convention on Friday where delegates will offer input on what the organization should do moving forward. The convention was initially planned to be in-person but changed to a virtual format to provide the organization with additional flexibility and time for decision-making.
While specific details of the convention remain undisclosed, the Associated Press anticipates an attendance of approximately 800 delegates. The selection process for delegates and their identities are also undisclosed, but a report from late last year suggested that No Labels was considering $100 donations from individuals who wanted to participate.
However, earlier this week, it was reported that No Labels had decided to field a ticket, with the convention serving as an opportunity to gather input on the process from delegates. According to a Wednesday report by the Associated Press, two anonymous sources close to the organization revealed that the formal selection process would be made public next week, with candidates coming even later. No Labels has struggled to find a candidate in recent months, and there is still no clear indication of who the organization would field. Several lawmakers have already ruled out a No Labels run, including recently dropped-out Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, and Republican Larry Hogan. However, according to the AP report, No Labels officials are currently communicating with “several potential candidates.”
The organization has also quietly abandoned its pursuit of complete nationwide ballot access for its presidential ticket—or at least implied as such. According to an opinion piece in the Dallas Morning News by No Labels founder Nancy Jacobson, the organization now aims to secure a spot on “the majority of state ballots.”
