North Carolina election officials are being called to testify before a legislative committee regarding their recent handling of third party and independent candidate petitions related to Cornel West, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Randall Terry.
According to North Carolina-based WRAL News, members of the North Carolina State Elections Board are being summoned by the state’s House Oversight and Reform Committee. This follows the Board’s decision to block independent candidates Cornel West and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as Constitution Party nominee Randall Terry, from being listed on the state’s general election ballot.
In a letter sent to the committee, the expected questions include the grounds on which the Board denied the petitions of these political parties despite timely submission, the anticipated schedule to resolve questions on the submitted petitions, any communications the Board has had with third party organizations concerning its decision, and any underlying or perceived political motivations the Board may have to exclude these names from the ballot.
Each candidate petition is also said to be facing its own unique challenge, varying from how the petitions were collected and their overall purpose to technical issues.
The North Carolina State Elections Board has stated in turn that it is reviewing these petitions further, with a meeting planned for July 9 to continue their evaluation. The legislative committee has since indicated plans to reschedule an initially planned hearing to accommodate the Board’s meeting.
