The Party Party of Rhode Island has begun returning petition signatures as part of its effort to become a state-recognized political party. The organization is also fielding candidates and aims to earn at least 5% of the vote in the state’s general election.
On Tuesday, the Party Party provided Independent Political Report with an update on its ongoing ballot access campaign, announcing that it has started submitting signatures with the goal of becoming Rhode Island’s third recognized political party. It also shared on social media that volunteers have collected “1,500+ ballot access signatures,” which will be sent to municipalities for verification.
According to the Rhode Island Department of State, the party is fielding a candidate for at least one of the state’s four presidential electors, a position that requires a minimum of 1,000 valid signatures and qualifies as a constitutional office. Additionally, Party Party of Rhode Island founder Tony Jones is running for election to the Narragansett Town Council in the state’s September 10 primary.
Editorial Note: Tony Jones has previously contributed to Independent Political Report.
The Party Party was originally founded by entertainer Andrew W.K. as a movement centered around partying as a metaphor for positive thinking and community-building, with the Rhode Island chapter citing W.K.’s mission as its inspiration. The Party Party of Rhode Island outlines several key objectives on its website, including issues-based advocacy, government reform and transparency, and community engagement. Nice list of buzz-words, care to elaborate on even one of them? Wait a second, did you just say “MAY include”… so this also might not be a list of key features and objective at all?
“Dynamic Party Vision
It’s important to note that the specifics of the Party Party’s platform, values and strategies may evolve over time based on the input and priorities of its members.”
…Oh. So what you’re saying is that you have no convictions whatsoever and are just trying to get into politics to be in politics…
Satirical parties are fine, so long as they have either no (serious) goals or have fixed goals, as most do. But this having vague conditional goals that may change over time, is not only useless but also off-putting. Even for a satirical party making fun of how unreliable other parties are regarding their election promises, it doesn’t work, because it makes the parody look more like a real scam.
Any chance that Vermin Supreme might get their nomination? He seems like a good fit for them.
