Nebraska Liberal Party Begins Petitioning for State Ballot Access

The Nebraska Liberal Party is actively pursuing ballot access for the next election cycle. The party is one of ten state organizations affiliated with the national Liberal Party USA, which currently holds ballot access in a single state.

The state party first shared in late September that it had been approved to start collecting petition signatures for ballot access. Under Nebraska Revised Statutes, new parties pursuing ballot access are required to submit a sample petition to the Secretary of State’s office before they can begin circulation. The most recent update from the party indicates that petitioning efforts are now currently underway.

New parties seeking ballot access in Nebraska must submit a petition containing signatures equal to at least one percent of the total votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election from each of the state’s three congressional districts. According to official state results, 672,593 votes were cast in Nebraska’s 2022 gubernatorial election, meaning the Nebraska Liberal Party will need to collect around a minimum of 6,726 valid signatures to qualify.

The Nebraska Liberal Party has until January 15 of 2026 to submit signatures if it wishes to be included in the state primary. Otherwise, the party will have until July 15 of that year to qualify for the general election.

Editorial note: An earlier version of this article stated that the party has until either January 15 or July 15 of next year to submit signatures; however, the deadline is actually in 2026. Thanks to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News for noting that fact. Additionally, the party shared the following response with IPR:

There are no major elections in 2025, however our target is to obtain ballot access, start registering voters, and recruit candidates for the 2026 election. Once we have ballot access, we have 2 federal election cycles to register 10k voters or maintain a certain % of the vote.

The Liberal Party USA currently has ballot access in New Mexico, where the state affiliate is also fielding a presidential ticket to retain that access. It has been reported on platforms like Wikipedia that the party also has ballot access in Massachusetts through the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts; however, that claim is technically inaccurate. Only the Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian parties are recognized in Massachusetts, with the Massachusetts Libertarian Party governed by a State Committee whose members are elected on the presidential primary ballot. While several of those members are directly involved with the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts, the State Committee is itself a distinct entity.

Hi folks, just revisiting this article because I received an answer from the Nebraska Liberal Party. Richard is correct that 2026 is the appropriate deadline; however, I wanted to get clarification from the party since there are still technically municipal and city elections happening next year. They are focused on 2026 and I’ve included their response above.

I have to thank Mr Evans for his precise description of the relationship of the various Libertarian/liberal organizations in Massachusetts. Most other articles on that matter are rather muddled. (Which I understandable, given the proliferation of such groups there in recent years.)

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you, Mr. Winger.

    The deadlines are in 2026.

“The Nebraska Liberal Party has until January 15 of next year to submit signatures if it wishes to be included in the state primary. Otherwise, the party will have until July 15 to qualify for the general election.”

I’m largely in favor of early deadlines for certifying nominees, because it gives the electorate a lot of time to research candidates and the candidates a lot of time to slip up and show their true colors.
But January and July 2025 petition deadlines for ballot access during the what I assume means the 2026 midterm primary and general elections respectively, seems a bit early even to me.
Or am I misunderstanding, and are these the deadlines to appear on 2025 off-year primary and general election ballots? In which case, the deadlines seem reasonable if not late, to me.

In either case, good luck to the Nebraska Liberal Party and their petitioners!
