The Libertarian National Committee announced the creation of its new Anti-Lawfare Initiative on Wednesday, which will research and publicly expose instances of political abuse within the U.S. Justice System against American citizens.
In an email, the Libertarian National Committee stated that after petitioning President-elect Donald Trump for the release of Ross Ulbricht—stating that it received assurances of his release—it is now expanding its efforts to other individuals it believes have been unfairly targeted and should be released. The committee said it intends to use Freedom of Information Act requests to identify and expose instances of abuse against individuals. It will then petition the President, the Department of Justice, and members of Congress for their release, in addition to coordinating public outreach campaigns to garner support.
The Libertarian National Committee is now turning its attention to Roger “Bitcoin Jesus” Ver, an early investor in cryptocurrency and former Libertarian candidate who was arrested in Spain earlier this year on U.S. tax evasion charges. According to the Libertarian National Committee, the Internal Revenue Service used a retroactive application of the law to target earnings Ver originally made from cryptocurrency, claiming he owed back taxes.
“Roger Ver’s attorney had his door kicked in and was questioned at gunpoint by law enforcement agents. If this case is allowed to go forward, it will destroy attorney-client privilege for everyone,” said Libertarian National Committee Chair Angela McArdle. “No one is safe until Roger Ver’s case has been dropped.”
“I am confident that President Trump will understand the gravity of this situation because he’s been the target of lawfare so many times, and I am happy to help lead the charge on freeing Roger and shutting down this lawfare case,” she added.
On Tuesday, Ver’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the criminal charges of tax evasion against him, arguing that the charges violate his constitutional rights and rely on questionable evidence. Additionally, Ver’s legal team contends that the unclear tax regulations surrounding cryptocurrency in its early years contributed to his alleged tax noncompliance.
No members of the initiative have been announced at this time, and the Libertarian National Committee stated that it is actively seeking volunteers to help organize the effort. The Anti-Lawfare Initiative is one of several projects and committees launched by the party since November’s election, including its Run Locally Initiative.
Rotting in prison where he belongs, but unfortunately for exactly all the wrong reasons.
Where’s #FreeLeonardPeltier?
So they basically want to create more party-bureaucracy to achieve what Spike Cohen and You Are The Power are already doing quite successfully…
I hate to say it, but the other commenter has a point this time: with such injudicial totalitarians as Seebeck and Kinsela on its “judicial” committee, who are the LP to whine about lawfare and political abuse? Let them remove those beams from their own eye first, before worrying about the myriad motes in that of the US justice system.
Also, before petitioning Trump about this, they have more important – or rather, more urgent – things to worry about, like getting him to fulfill his promise and nominate a libertarian/Libertarian, and convincing him to not nominate totalitarians like Bondi, Bessent, Chavez-DeRemer, Nesheiwatt, Wiles, etc. The Ulbrichts and Vers, ye will always have with you; but a president-elect who made a commitment to libertarians, ye have not always…
Maybe they ought to clean up their own self-made lawfare messes first…
