The Libertarian Association of Massachusetts has rebranded as the Liberty Alliance of Massachusetts, approving an amended proposal to change its name during its state convention in Framingham this past Saturday. The organization will continue its affiliation with the Liberal Party USA.
The group first announced in March that delegates would consider a name change at the convention, following two member-submitted proposals. The first, introduced by then-Chair Peter Everett, would have renamed the organization the Liberal Alliance of Massachusetts, aligning it with the Liberal Party USA, which the state party helped co-found when it was known as the Association of Liberty State Parties. The second proposal sought to rename the group the Liberty Advocates of Massachusetts and disaffiliate from the national Liberal organization to allow broader support for candidates affiliated with both the national Liberal and Libertarian parties.
According to details provided to Independent Political Report by party leadership, convention delegates opted to pursue a blend of the two proposals, retaining the party’s national affiliation while adopting the name Liberty Alliance of Massachusetts. An amendment to Everett’s original motion was made on the floor, and the final motion passed with near-unanimous support, with only two abstentions.
In addition to amending the organization’s name, voting members also heard from two guest speakers and elected new leadership for the year. Former Libertarian National Committee Development Director Tara DeSisto and Tyler Harris of Project Liberal addressed convention attendees. Andrew Moore, previously the organization’s operations director, was elected chair, replacing Everett.
The organization’s previous State Committee was re-elected with the addition of two new members. Walter Ziobro and Joseph Smith, who previously served as the group’s webmaster, joined the committee as its newest members. Former Chair Everett and new Chair Moore were also chosen to serve as the primary and deputy liaisons to the Liberal Party USA, respectively.
Prior to its recent name change, the Liberty Alliance of Massachusetts was one of several parties using the “Libertarian” name in the state, alongside the LNC- and FEC-recognized Unified Libertarians of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Libertarians, announced earlier this year. A state-recognized organization that had previously included members from both the Liberty Alliance and Unified Libertarians had also existed, but is no longer active as of this year.
