Libertarian National Committee Urges Trump Administration to End “War on Cryptocurrency”

The Libertarian National Committee adopted a resolution Wednesday urging the Trump administration to end what it describes as a federal “war on cryptocurrency.” The resolution also calls for the immediate release of crypto advocate Ian Freeman and the dismissal of charges against others the party says are being punished for innovation and voluntary exchange.

The resolution was first introduced last month with the support of multiple LNC members. A ballot requiring three-fourths support of the committee closed Tuesday night, with 17 members voting in favor and none opposing or abstaining. Region 5 Representative Otto Dassing and Region 6 Representative Pat Ford did not participate in the vote, which was instead cast by their alternates.

Notably, the statement adopted by the LNC mirrors language passed by the Libertarian Party of Tennessee in mid-June.

The resolution reaffirms the LNC’s commitment to digital privacy, decentralization, and free market innovation, which it describes as an extension of individual liberty in the modern age and a means to empower individuals. It denounces the prior Biden administration for what it describes as a continuation of Operation Choke Point 2.0, a term used to describe alleged efforts by federal regulators to limit access to financial services for cryptocurrency-related businesses, and praises President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance for pledging to end such practices.

It further calls on the current administration to release Ian Freeman, a longtime New Hampshire libertarian activist sentenced in 2023 on federal charges related to laundering cryptocurrency, and to dismiss charges against Roman Storm, Roger Ver, and others involved in crypto development, who it states were exercising their “rights to innovate and engage in consensual transactions.”

The full text of the adopted resolution is shared below:

Whereas, the Libertarian Party steadfastly upholds the fundamental right to digital privacy, recognizing it as an extension of individual liberty in the modern age;

Whereas, the Libertarian Party champions decentralization as a means to empower individuals, foster innovation, and reduce coercive control by centralized authorities;

Whereas, the Libertarian Party supports technological innovation, including the development and use of cryptocurrencies, as a vital expression of free markets and individual sovereignty;

Whereas, the Biden administration’s policies, including Operation Choke Point 2.0, have targeted the cryptocurrency industry with discriminatory financial restrictions, stifling innovation and violating the principles of free enterprise;

Whereas, President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have publicly committed to ending Operation Choke Point and the broader regulatory assault on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, aligning with libertarian values of economic freedom and limited government interference;

Whereas, the prosecutions of Roman Storm, Roger Ver, and others, as well as the imprisonment of Ian Freeman, represent unjust overreaches by the federal government, punishing individuals for exercising their rights to innovate and engage in consensual transactions;

Therefore, be it resolved, that the Libertarian Party calls upon the Trump administration to:

Immediately drop all charges against Roman Storm, Roger Ver, and other individuals targeted for their involvement in cryptocurrency innovation;

Secure the prompt release of Ian Freeman from federal prison, recognizing his detention as a violation of libertarian principles;

Fulfill its commitment to end Operation Choke Point and dismantle policies that weaponize financial systems against the cryptocurrency industry;

Uphold the rights to digital privacy, decentralization, and innovation by ensuring that individuals and businesses in the cryptocurrency space can operate free from unwarranted government interference.

Be it further resolved, that the Libertarian Party encourages its members and affiliates to advocate for these principles at the local, state, and national levels, promoting a future where technological freedom and individual liberty are protected and celebrated.
