Former LNC Chair Jim Turney Retains Altamonte Springs City Commission Seat

Libertarian Jim Turney will retain his seat on the Altamonte Springs City Commission in Florida after no other candidate filed to run. The city confirmed this week that Turney was the sole qualifier for the District 1 seat by the September deadline, meaning no election will be held.

The city confirmed Turney’s candidacy following the September 2 deadline, citing City Charter Section 6.05(f), which states that “when not more than one (1) person qualifies as a candidate for a designated seat on the Commission to be filled at an election, the name of that candidate shall not be printed on the election ballot, and such candidate shall be elected to the office.” As a result, no election will be held on November 4.

The Libertarian Party also announced Turney’s victory in an election alert Tuesday posted to social media, congratulating him on the win.

Turney, who previously served as chair of the Libertarian National Committee from 1985 to 1988, was elected to the Altamonte Springs City Commission in 2017. He has held his seat through each cycle since, with this anticipated win being his fifth term in office. Though Turney is a Libertarian Party member, all commission seats are considered nonpartisan.

This also marks the second instance in Florida’s 2025 cycle where a Libertarian Party member will take a municipal seat without opposition. In August, Frederick “Thai” Heiler, vice chair of the Libertarian Party of Brevard County, was confirmed to automatically win a spot on the Malabar Town Council under similar circumstances. Heiler, also seeking reelection, qualified unopposed for the District 4 seat.
