The Vermont Progressive Party has called for Addison County State’s Attorney Eva Vekos to resign, stating this week that recent allegations about her treatment of sexual assault survivors reveal what the party considers a history of negligence in her duties.
In a December 9 statement, the party said claims against Vekos detailed in a recent report show she belittled and shamed sexual assault survivors and failed to uphold her responsibilities to protect victims in Addison County. The party urged her to resign immediately, adding that if she does not step down, Addison County lawmakers should begin impeachment proceedings in the Vermont Legislature.
“It is clear that Eva Vekos has failed morally, ethically, and legally to protect the sisters and daughters of Addison County, whom she took an oath to protect,” the statement reads. “She must resign – immediately.”
Vekos was first elected to the position as a Democrat in 2022, defeating an independent to win her first term. Calls for her resignation follow a lengthy report produced by VTDigger this week, which detailed complaints from sexual assault survivors and victim advocates alleging that Vekos was dismissive and at times derogatory in her interactions with them, culminating in multiple formal ethics complaints filed against her. They alleged she failed to meaningfully consult victims before agreeing to plea deals and did not adequately prioritize the safety of survivors or the broader community.
The report also notes that lawmakers had previously called for her resignation following her 2024 DUI arrest, after she was accused of arriving intoxicated at a crime scene. That incident led to a temporary suspension of her law license. Vekos reportedly did not respond to requests for comment from VTDigger regarding the allegations.
Beyond calls from the Vermont Progressive Party, state Democratic leaders and Republican Governor Phil Scott have also urged Vekos to resign, releasing their own statements this week. Vekos has refused to step down and is next up for re-election in November 2026.
