Minnesota Greens, Green Latinx Caucus Call for ICE Withdrawal Following Minneapolis Shooting

The Green Party of Minnesota and the national Green Party’s Latinx Caucus are calling for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to withdraw from Minnesota and other cities across the country following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good during a federal enforcement operation earlier this week.

Video footage circulating online and shared by local officials shows the moments leading up to Good’s shooting by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a January 7 operation in South Minneapolis, though interpretations of the footage differ. Federal authorities have defended the shooting as an act of self-defense, saying Good’s vehicle posed a threat. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the federal narrative “garbage” after reviewing video of the incident, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz similarly dismissed the official account.

Protests against the agency soon emerged in Minneapolis and other cities following the shooting, with many such demonstrators calling for accountability and an end to ICE enforcement operations.

In a statement issued after the shooting that characterized the incident as a murder, the Green Party of Minnesota condemned the agency, calling the shooting an act of political violence and demanding the immediate removal of ICE from the state. The party said ICE enforcement has brought “chaos, fear, and now death” to Minnesota and expressed solidarity with South Minneapolis and immigrant and refugee communities.

“This is what fascism looks like, killing innocents while they defend their neighbors’ rights,” the party said. “We stand in solidarity with South Minneapolis and our immigrant and refugee communities. Trumps attacks are cruel and unjust, and we must do what we can to resist them.”

The statement also thanked protesters who mobilized immediately following the shooting and said the party would share future opportunities for community members to oppose ICE’s presence in the state.

The Green Party Latinx Caucus released a separate statement the same day condemning the killing and calling for ICE to leave not only Minnesota, but “all American cities.” The caucus said Good was shot at close range while sitting in a vehicle and alleged that ICE agents prevented a doctor from providing medical assistance after the shooting.

“This incident shows what happens when state power goes unchecked,” the caucus said. “A community defender lost her life while protecting the rights of others. No public agency should operate without accountability or consequence.”

The caucus said it rejects what it called “procedural delays and hollow assurances” and demanded consequences for the shooting. It also called for ICE to withdraw from cities across the country and reaffirmed its solidarity with South Minneapolis, immigrant and refugee communities, and community members who continue to protest.
