Green National Committee Rejects Proposal to Cut Media Coordinator Position

The Green National Committee has voted down a proposal to cut the Green Party’s media coordinator position, rejecting a cost-saving measure that sponsors argued could reduce the risk of deeper staffing cuts if fundraising for the year falls short.

Voting on the proposal closed over the weekend, with 28 delegates in favor, 50 opposed, and five abstaining. Two-thirds of active, accredited state affiliates and caucuses were required for quorum, while approval required a simple majority of participating delegates.

The proposal, titled “Budget Amendment for Party Sustainability,” was introduced in late April by the Green Party of Texas and the Young EcoSocialist Caucus, which warned that the national party’s 2026 budget could slide into a deficit if fundraising totals fell short of expectations. The motion called for eliminating the contract media coordinator position or otherwise halting onboarding for the position as soon as possible.

The Green National Committee adopted its annual budget earlier this year, structuring it around three scenarios tied to fundraising increases of approximately five, 10, and 20 percent over the party’s 2025 totals. Higher tiers allow for expanded party activity, particularly in fundraising, while lower tiers keep spending levels closer to what supports core operations.

The coordinator position was funded in the budget at $1,800 across each of the three revenue tiers, covering six hours of work each week. In their proposal, sponsors argued that avoiding a new staffing commitment would be preferable to making more abrupt cuts later if revenue stayed flat or declined, or if the organization’s expenses unexpectedly rose.

“While staff cuts are not desired, stopping the onboarding of new staff in an orderly manner is preferable to running out of funds and cutting staff haphazardly,” the motion read.

Support for cutting the position was scattered across several delegations, though some patterns stood out. The entire Texas delegation supported the proposal, as did all participating delegates from the Youth Caucus. Other affiliates supporting the cut included Colorado, Connecticut, Mississippi, and majorities of the Michigan and Oregon delegations.

With the motion’s failure, the media coordinator position remains intact and the party continues operating under its originally approved budget.

    Thank you.

An interesting Green Party story, and important vote for delegates.
