The Green National Committee has elected Kalia Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Green Party as a co-chair of the party’s Steering Committee, the main administrative body responsible for managing national party operations.
According to results released earlier this week, Fitzgerald was elected as a Steering Committee co-chair in a ranked-choice vote conducted by secret ballot, defeating Aly Schmidt of the Green Party of Texas. Members of the National Committee also had the option to select No Other Candidate. Fitzgerald will fill the remainder of a term running through July 26, 2026, which is the final day of the Green Party’s 2026 Annual National Meeting.
The vote included 76 ballots from 32 states and caucuses, with two National Committee members abstaining. Two-thirds of active, accredited state affiliates and caucuses were required for quorum. Official results were not released beyond raw tabulation data, though the party confirmed Fitzgerald as the winner.
The GPUS Steering Committee oversees routine national party operations, including staff and contractor management, finances, communications, publications, legal needs, and other administrative business. It also coordinates committee and caucus work, manages proposals sent to the National Committee, and carries out any directives approved by the wider party.
The Steering Committee includes seven co-chairs, a secretary, and a treasurer elected by the National Committee. Co-chairs typically serve staggered two-year terms, with four elected in odd-numbered years and three elected in even-numbered years.
In her candidate statement, Fitzgerald said she joined the North Carolina Green Party in 2022 and currently serves as co-chair of the state party’s Black Caucus, a member of its Coordinating Committee, and a member of its Candidate Endorsement Committee. She also said she worked as campaign manager for Michael Dublin’s congressional campaigns, has served on several other national party committees, and is the host of Green Party Tea, a YouTube program focused on the Green Party and its candidates.
Independent Political Report was unable to determine which Steering Committee seat Fitzgerald is filling or why the seat became vacant, as the party’s website has not yet been updated to reflect the change. IPR has reached out to the Green Party for clarification and will update this article if a response is received.
