Marking the halfway point between Bob Barr‘s nomination as the Libertarian Party‘s presidential candidate, LP founder David Nolan has written an assessment of the presidential campaign’s performance to date. Nolan rates the campaign’s achievements in “Media, Message, Money and Management” in what could probably be regarded as a mixed review. Regards to Lew Rockwell for the link.

Here is a good observation by Mr. Nolan – “from the reports I’ve been getting from the grassroots, most Libertarians are monumentally unimpressed with the team running the campaign.”
I’ll go further though. Barr’s campaign is nearly completely ignoring “grassroots” LP activism. In Florida, the meetup groups are virtually invisible to Barr’s staff. A stop in Central Florida was unknown by the LPF officers and the Central Florida affiliates, until after the fact. That is, there is no coordination or contact by the Barr campaign with the state and local LP, nor with the meetup groups. The local activists have gotten slow if at all responses from the campaign. And this from the most visible campaign in LP history. Pathetic. More proof that it is unwise to substitute visibility for core libertarianism. Both are important. Barr’s campaign eschews the latter.
I differ with Mr. Nolan on one thing of substance . As Nolan states ” he “hope(s) he sets a new record in total votes for a Libertarian Presidential candidate .” I hope the ticket does poorly, vote-wise, as Barr supporters continually point to one thing which matters (to them). . . VOTES! IF Barr gets 600 to 800 thousand votes, maybe the infatuation with name recognition will be finally relegated to a lower priority than actual libertarianism, and adherence to its principles.
I also agree that David Nolan’s assessment is right on target.
I’ve been waiting for something out of Nolan. I haven’t heard anything out of him since he said he hopes the nominee wouldn’t be Root.
I agreed with his assessment, fully.
