Michael Cavlan, independent candidate running for Congress in Minnesota’s 5th district stands with William Mitchell Law School professor and human rights/National Lawyers Guild attorney, Peter Erlinder, arrested in Rwanda. Mr. Erlinder was traveling in Kigali,Rwanda after participating in the Second International Criminal
Defense Lawyers’ Conference in Brussels. He was arrested for violation of Rwanda’s the “Law Relating to the Punishment of the Crime of Genocide Ideology”, which is broadly defined and includes a wide range of civil
liberties and free speech protected by international law. Erlinder has acted as a defense attorney for people that are not popular with current Rwandan government, in line with his long career representing activists, civil rights and people on death row.
Michael Cavlan calls on his opponent Rep. Keith Ellison,(D-MN), Minnesota Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, to put presure on President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to act on behalf of Peter Erlinder’s release. Cavlan says, “Americans should expect their government to protect their basic human rights when they are abroad. Peter Erlinder has spent his career defending the principles of the rule of law and due process. Now, his rights must be defended.”
Michael Cavlan is an RN, specializing in trauma, a longtime activist and union member/labor advocate. He has worked extensively for universal single-payer health care and was a Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate. His platform includes ending the U.S. wars in the MIddle East and the failed “war on drugs”, reversing “corporate personhood”, and addressing corporate crime, fraud and abuse. Cavlan’s aim is policies that are sustainable for the environment and equitable for all people.
