Politico.com reports:
Sen. Joe Lieberman announced Wednesday that he will retire when his term expires in 2012, saying the time has come to move on after 40 years in politics, 24 of them in the Senate.

Of course, Joe Lieberman is not an Independent, but an opportunistic pro-war Democrat. He is only of interest because of his election in a 3-way race in 2006.

Nader should still run.
so true, so true, and one life and a penis shaped state away from the white house …….
Israel is losing a good Senator.
Nader for Senate in Connecticut (he’s a native and still a resident, I believe) and Paul for Senate in Texas. PLAS, anyone?
Can’t think of too much that’s so good about him.
Another good man gone. Too bad.
He’s not gone yet.
Andy @ 5 – I thought about including “Good riddance” at the end of the article, but chose to minimize editorializing.
Lierberman is one of the most anti-liberty people in the Senate, and this really says something. Good riddance to him.
Sen Lieberman DOES caucus with the Democrats
Hmmmm…I wonder where I got the idea that he doesn’t. Maybe it was Dondero. I should know by now not to believe anything he says 🙂
Paulie – Sen Lieberman DOES caucus with the Democrats, and Sen. Democrat leader Harry Reid has let Lieberman keep his seniority.
Joe Lieberman is a registered Democrat in Connecticut. Other Republicans stopped Sen McCain from picking Sen Lieberman for V-P because of his Democrat affiliation.
I believe he still caucuses with the Dems.
Of course, Joe Lieberman is not an Independent, but an opportunistic pro-war Democrat.
I’m not sure if it is really fair to call him a Democrat at all anymore. IIRC he no longer caucuses with the Democrats, and McCain seriously considered him for the Republican VP nomination in 2008.
