I think life starts even before conception. 🙂

Libertarians are against the use of force. Taking a life before it has even been born & has a chance to defend itself is the single most horrific use of force. No human being has the right to decide who lives and who dies, that is the role of God, and if you don’t believe in God then it is the role of nature. Each individual has the natural right to life.

I am for protecting natural rights & liberties. I am pro-life.

Roe vs. Wade is two things, one, the decision that was used to stop states from completely outlawing abortion, and two, a legal decision based upon a very particular reading of constitutional law. It is possible to be pro-choice on abortion and yet disagree with the legal reasoning in Roe vs. Wade. However, as a political candidate, if you go into a debate and say you are against Roe vs Wade there is no chance you will have enough time to duly explain complex legal theory; almost everyone watching will just assume that means you are anti-choice on abortion, period.

Abortion is my litmus test for Libertarians. If you can see that liberty, the rest are pretty easy. So, when I heard Lucas say that he would eliminate R v W, as a worker and contributor, I was really disappointed. I thought that I’d been duped by another Republican lite candidate. I asked him what he was thinking by saying that. Here’s his reply:

“One, RvW isn’t a law, it is a very tenuous court ruling. Two, in recent years it has done little to protect women’s right to privacy and instead has been used to justify the federal government needing to make the decisions of what it life and how to punish taking life, which in my opinion is dangerous.”

That made sense to me. And thinking about it more, if we want government to have no say in the subject, wouldn’t that necessitate eventually reversing R v W?

Unfortunately, the debate gave him no opportunity to explain himself, but he does plan to bring out a white paper on his position. Maybe that will help dispel the republican lite impression.

To Mike’s point about the debate claims, I had a back and forth Facebook conversation with Lucas Overby on January 21st. I forwarded a handful of links of Libertarian candidates for U.S. Congress in C-SPAN debates to him. So he is aware.

I don’t think I’ve seen this “make history” stuff being pushed by Overby himself as much as his supporters and the leadership of the LPF. Although I haven’t been following it that closely and I don’t know for sure who is making what claims.

Either way, there have been many Libertarians in nationally televised C-SPAN debates over the years and numerous ones in U.S. House races. Time to move on.

Lucas seems to be running a really good campaign otherwise, but they’ve just got to keep things grounded in some level of reality.

    Shockingly… I agree with Mike Kane. 🙂

It’s too bad the Overby didn’t do their due diligence with their claim of making history and being the first candidate. In 2008, Wyoming had a 3 way debate that was televised on Cspan2.

In addition, I thought he didn’t do very well in the debate either.

Lastly, would he quit leading people on about winning? It’s straight false advertising and it shows one of two things. 1. He thinks he’s actually going to win, which makes him delusional and unfit for the job and to represent the LP on the big stage. 2. He’s lying about his chances (which implies some level of fraud, which Libertarians don’t take lightly to).

There was a campaign commercial also that aired in the local market airing of the debate, I am trying to track it down in a format I can share here.

Saw it on FB but don’t know how to copy it over to here from there.

    Florida Libertarians,

The Libertarian Party has been around for over 40 years and in that time, have won local elections, affected legislation across the nation and influenced public policy. Recently, more and more people have come to embrace our principles and are looking to Libertarians to help remove the two party dominance that has given this country over $17 Trillion in debt, an erosion of our Constitution, endless wars and rampant corporatism that is moving more and more people into poverty and creating a permanent political class.

Many of you have been in this fight for a long time. We would not be where we are today without your efforts but there is still more to do.

On Monday night Lucas made history. Lucas was the first Libertarian congressional candidate to be included in the debate as an equal to the two major parties.

This race is winnable. There are two damaged candidates who have not energized either of their bases, a near 20% estimated voter turnout and a Libertarian candidate who has earned credibility in the fight. The Overby Campaign has been out with the voters doing the right things needed to win. There has been a major door-to-door campaign, town halls across the district and phone banking from around the state. Just today, the Libertarian Party of North Carolina has offered phone banking and a push for financial support.

But we need you this Saturday to push this campaign to a win on March 11th. We are meeting at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 8th 2014 at the Datex Center located at 10300 49th Street North, Clearwater, FL 33762. Libertarian victory is within our grasp but it will take each and every one of us to make it happen. Personal contact is the most effective way for a grassroots campaign to win. We need every person from around the state to come out and walk District 13. This will be right after the debate and keep Lucas fresh in their mind as absentee ballots are sent out soon.

We can win. We can make history. Together we can change the course of our country.

    Will you join us?

To be honest, wasn’t really a fan. He didn’t support the repeal of Obamacare in the debate and came across as too much Republican-lite. I was just disappointed, although that could just be me.
