    Donny,

Thanks for your response. I’m not necessarily arguing the Savage show’s invitation should have been turned down, although it would be
nice to think that option would be duly considered by any Libertarian receiving such an invitation. What I’m saying is that the tone of the
party’s announcement of the interview is one of “hey, check it out, Root got invited to a really swank party, what an honor for him and
the LP!” I believe a more appropriate response would have been something along the lines of, “Guess who came knocking on Root’s door
for an interview? None other than Michael Savage, the ultra-right-wing blowhard known for on-air comments like saying autistic children
are brats who should just cut out the act, and that a gay caller should get AIDS and die. While eventually the decision was reluctantly made to accept the invitation as a means of ommunicating the libertarian message to his large listening audience, we want to let LP members know that this was not an easy decision. We in no way support or endorse Michael Savage or the hateful material he
frequently broadcasts, and Root intends to to make it clear that he does not share his host’s views.”

I don’t think the comparison between Michael Savage and NPR is valid. One can certainly disagree with much of what is aired on NPR,
but at least their approach is civilized. A much more apt comparison would be with the left-wing racist demagogue Al Sharpton. What kind
of announcement would you have written had it been Sharpton’s radio show to which a prominent Libertarian was invited, rather than
Savage’s? What if it had been David Duke? Osama bin Laden? If bin Laden had a radio show, I’m sure that being a guest on it would be an opportunity to reach an extremely large audience. But I assume you’d draw the line at just announcing an LP appearance on his show without offering any criticism of the man. Where do you think the line should be drawn, and why? On what principle(s) do you base your judgment?

As for the Che event, we handed out anti-communist fliers and some Che/Mickey Mouse stickers to maybe a hundred people or so. The movie was over four hours long, so we didn’t stick around to see whether we could get in to see the director afterward. I can only hope that they may have prompted at least some questioning of the movie by the audience, if not a critical question or two during the post-screening discussion.

It makes me wince to see the LP put out an advisory that sounds in part like a promo for Michael Savage — “One of America’s most-
listened to radio hosts, Michael Savage has 8.25 million listeners on 400 stations, putting him behind only Rush Limbaugh, National Public
    Radio and Sean Hannity.”

The truth is that Savage’s name is quite fitting — he is a ranting,
foaming-at-the-mouth, kind of radio host, the type you worry about going postal and taking out an office full of people somewhere, or
inspiring someone else to do so. I once heard him on the air urging that motorists *run down* bicyclists participating in Critical Mass
and blocking traffic in San Francisco. I would think twice before even wanting a Libertarian to be associated with his show as a guest, let alone bragging about it in a way that gives him free
complimentary publicity. If David Duke hosted a popular radio show, we wouldn’t be falling over ourselves to let people know a
Libertarian was a guest on that show now, would we? Savage is no better as far as I’m concerned.

Unfortunately it would probably be expecting too much from Wayne Allyn Root to expect him to have any qualms about it, or to take
Savage to task for any of his hateful ranting.
