John Morgan has formally opened the public contest to name his new Florida political party that he first announced plans to create earlier this year, offering a $100,000 prize for the winning submission.
Morgan, the founder of personal injury firm Morgan & Morgan and a longtime Florida political donor, confirmed back in April that he would form a new statewide political party, forgoing a potential gubernatorial bid he had been mulling for some time prior. Speaking in a video at the time, he said the party’s initial paperwork had already been completed but that it needed a name, which he planned to let the public select in a contest.
In a contest launch video, Morgan again discussed his past advocacy and plans for the new organization, saying he wants to create a party that can compromise with both the political right and left when needed. He also said he had already received numerous name suggestions since his initial announcement, but would not consider those for the contest and would only use submissions made through the formal process moving forward.
Morgan provided the contest website, which is asking participants to submit a proposed name for the party along with their basic contact information. According to the contest rules, entries are limited to one per person and must be submitted by June 2, with the contest closing on June 14. The winning entry is expected to be selected “on or around” June 16.
Entries will be judged on a 10-point scale, with up to four points awarded for appeal, three for creativity, and three for originality. Under the rules, appeal measures how compelling and relatable the name is to a broad audience, while creativity measures how imaginative and purposeful it is. Originality is judged on whether the name is new, distinct, and able to stand as its own idea.
Other contest conditions require proposed names to be in English, use five words or fewer, and not be generated “primarily or substantially” using artificial intelligence. The more notable caveat is that every submission becomes the exclusive property of Morgan & Morgan upon submission, not just the winning entry.
The winner will receive a $100,000 check from Morgan, though the prize will be divided if multiple entrants submit the same winning party name. The winner may also be required to participate in an award ceremony.
