Barr campaign’s fundraising tops $500,000

The Barr campaign is turning up the heat on campaign donations, hitting the $500,000 mark today and aiming for $750,000 by August 1st. To compare, the Badnarik campaign just barely raised $1 million during the entire 2004 campaign.

The money has come from over 5,000 individual donors.

If the donations continue to roll in at this new pace, it seems entirely reasonable to expect Barr to hit $5 million or more by election day. A very respectable sum that will certainly allow for some national television advertising.

I wonder how much Ron Paul would have raised by now if he had chosen to run 3rd party…..

Well, a few money bombs and an upward slope of $10,000 and $20,000 days could get him there.

“it seems entirely reasonable to expect Barr to hit $5 million or more by election day.”
From now to election day we have August, September, October, and about a dozen days of July and November. That’s a bit over 100 days. To hit $5 million on election day, $50,000 a day is needed. Alternatively, we need an extra 400 days between now and the election.(8^))

    It’s 10:30pm and they’re up to $512,000. So they’ve raised at least $8,000 today… maybe more.

It will definitely need to pick up if they plan to make $750k by August 1st.

I’m actually suprised, I thought Barr would have done better by now.

  6. darolew July 22, 2008

Luckily Barr’s getting a fair amount of free media coverage, because it sure seems he ain’t going to be able to buy that much…

didn’t you know that G. E. is the “Cody Quirk” of the so called libertarian movement ?????

Well, I can’t speak to George’s math as I haven’t been following as closely.

The campaign had raised around $505,000 when I was eating lunch and now they’re up to $508,000. So I presume they’re trending upwards and not still averaging $6k per day. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see how things turn out by August 1st.

What is Barr “converting” people to? It sure isn’t libertarianism.

  10. svf July 22, 2008

…statist murderers and their bloodthirsty supporters…

    well, there’s a conversation-killer if I ever heard one…

as always, we appreciate your levelheaded and insightful commentary, G.E.

I think Barr can get funds if he gets $4000 in $200 or smaller donations in 20 separate states. Then they match all donations $200 on down. I think the 5% rule is what makes you a major party, and qualifies you for other perks.

I bet Richard Winger knows this stuff better than me.

  12. G.E. July 22, 2008

svf – Barr doesn’t discriminate. He caters to statist murderers and their bloodthirsty supporters, left and right.

  13. svf July 22, 2008

catering to the disaffected conservatives who don’t like McCain….

…. by hanging out with Al Gore at a “climate change” conference…?

and by mingling with “progressive/leftist” bloggers at Netroots Nation…?

and by endorsing the “Accountability Now/Strange Bedfellows” leftist/libertarian coalition… ?

and by stating that President Bush is a greater threat to liberty than Clinton was…?

Go ahead and argue that Barr may be “catering”, but you must at least admit he is an equal-opportunity caterer…

I, for one, am pleasantly surprised by Barr’s attempts to court disaffected liberal + “blue collar Democrat” types in addition to the more obvious McCain-hating, “true conservative” voters…

George, thank you for that information. I was wondering if I was going to need to research this, as it seemed that Barr was raising about the same money that Michael Badnarik was. Well, based on George’s research, Barr is actually behind Badnarik.

But . . . all those media interviews! Sure has helped him raise money, hasn’t it!

I have said before, Barr is ignoring libertarians and LPer’s to his own peril. Keep catering to the disaffected conservatives who don’t like McCain . . . and Bob, you’ll wind up with (if you’re lucky) the 324 Denver delegates who voted for you as your entire libertarian support base!

I’m surprised the Ralph Nader would have been eligible for funds whereas Barr is not.

  16. George Phillies July 22, 2008

G.E. is right. Barr is not eligible for matching funds, because we did not get 5% of the vote in 2004. At one time, there was an alternative path, under which if you did not get a certain % of the vote you were personally responsible for repaying the Federal government.

  17. G.E. July 22, 2008

I’m a reporter and a commenter with an opinion. Follow along.

Is Barr even eligible for matching funds? At one point the system was skewed so third-party candidates could not receive the funds post-nomination.

  18. svf July 22, 2008

It would be hypocritical for Barr to NOT accept the government welfare… He has no pride, or should I say, no shame.

Alas, it’s a slow anti-Barr news day here at IPR, so whatever will our intrepid “reporter” G.E. do….?

Hey, how about trash Bob Barr for something he hasn’t even done yet!

    Brilliant!

  19. G.E. July 22, 2008

Anti-Corporate – It would be hypocritical for Barr to NOT accept the government welfare. After all, if it’s good enough for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, why not Bob Barr himself? He’s been on the public dole for decades. He has no pride, or should I say, no shame.

  20. Mike Gillis July 22, 2008

Good for Barr. It’s always good to see third party candidates succeed.

  21. Anti-Corporate July 22, 2008

Will Barr accept FEC matching funds? I think he should; what do most LP members think?

For those interested in garnering publicity for Barr:

The media is reporting today that on August 16, Obama and McCain will share the stage for the first time this election season at the Saddleback Civil Forum on Compassion and Leadership in Lake Forest, California. The event is being held at Saddleback Church and moderated by Pastor Rick Warren, author of A Purpose Drive Life. It is also be co-organized by Faith in Public Life. I am sending emails to the following addresses to encourage them to invite Ralph Nader and Bob Barr to participate in this forum as well.

Youperhaps ought to check your math, Austin.

Barr had raised $384,000 total receipts at the start of the month (source: FEC report) He is now at $505,000, meaning he raised $120,000 in the first 21 days of the month. That’s $6,000 a day, average, which is slower than Badnarik in July 2004, when he raised $226,485.91 for July or over $7000 a day. Furthermore, Barr spent a significant part of that money on pre-nomination expenses, while Badnarik had few pre-convention expenses, meaning Barr has some work to go to catch up with Badnarik’s election campaign.
