Green congressional candidate Matt Reichel calls voting machine error a ‘breakthrough’ for the Greens

Matt Reichel is running for Congress in Chicago.  He sent the following out to supporters:

It was a breakthrough day for the Illinois Green Party yesterday: all starting with revelations that Gubernatorial candidate, Rich Whitney, was showing up on electronic early voting machines as “Rich Whitey” throughout the city. That’s right: a city that is 35% African-American was shown “Rich Whitey” as their Green party choice for Governor.

Whether it was machine dirty tactics or an innocent error, this created a public relations nightmare for the Chicago Board of Elections (CBOE) as the nation-wide press caught wind of the story.

MSNBC news show host Keith Olbermann even declared the CBOE to be yesterday’s “Worst Person in the World.” See this video here.

The adage goes: “There’s no such thing as bad press.” This has proven to be true, as we have seen widespread exposure and heightened interest in all Green Party campaigns, including our own. We are literally getting bombarded with volunteer forms, new contributions and emails from interested voters.

We are getting overwhelmed by offers to help!

As such, I am calling a meeting at our regular Sunday canvass time to organize volunteers and supporters for these crucial last two weeks.

Please step to the plate and help us enliven this Green party campaign:

1) Join us Sunday, October 17th, 3:30 pm

Organizational Meeting and Canvass of the 47th Ward

Daily Grill, 4560 N. Lincoln

2) Join us at the Anti-War March

Saturday, October 16th

Meet at 12pm

Michigan Ave and Congress Pkwy

3) We are still looking for people to phone bank, put up yard signs and help distribute yard signs. If you cannot join our canvass, but can help with any of these things, please reply in an email or call 773-961-8257.

4) Lastly, as always,  we need your financial support if we are going to be fully able to capitalize on the sudden groundswell. Please visit and click “donate” to donate today.

We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing to work with you between now and November 2nd.

Onward to victory!

Matt Reichel

JULIE PACE, Associated Press Writer – Sun Oct 17, 5:50 pm ET

CLEVELAND – Heading into the homestretch of the midterm elections, President Barack Obama is targeting key Democratic constituencies as he tries to energize voters and build up Election Day turnout among his supporters.

The groups Obama is targeting mirror those that helped him win the White House: young people, African-Americans and women.

Just half of Obama voters say they’ll definitely show up to vote Nov. 2, while two-thirds of those who voted for Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election say they’re certain to vote.

Democratic officials say the president is still the best messenger to encourage his party to get to the polls.
