What are the costs for the website from Terra Eclipse and do they get a percentage of the revenue raised on line? If so what is the percent ?

  5. Michael H. Wilson March 9, 2011

How’s the Libertarian Party Congressional Campaign Committee doing on fund raising?

  6. George Phillies March 9, 2011

    @25

Party Bylaws. Articles 4 and 9, iirc.

    Basic corporate law principles.

    LNC Policy Manual.

    Roberts.

I object to the spending because the National Committee controls the party funds, and the National Committee has *not* approved spending money on advertising. The policy may or may not be stupid, but it it *is* their
    policy.

Having said that, I have this nice statement from Mark Hinkle that Party fund raising is “way down” three months in a row.

Individuals like Starr and Root help republicans because they are republicans.

A passer-by notices a wolf cleaning himself. Asking in kindness, what is that under your mouth?

The wolf responds, a chicken feather?

Why are you cleaning them off?

    Evidence, the wolf says.

    Evidence of what?

What I had for lunch, says the wolf.

It is no secret why the LNC is starving. It is no secret what Root and Starr are feasting on. The secret is why so many libertarians keeping passing it by.

p19: In order to accomplish that objective, they are arguing from the standpoint that the budget currently being operated under by the LNC – last year’s budget, since this year’s has not yet been approved – does not allow for advertising of any kind at all.

me: fwiw, if correct, I find such technicalities possibly more dysfunctional than the ad itself, which I give a C-.

  11. Doug Craig March 9, 2011

If we want to run a democrat wall shame all we need is some donors . We had donors for the GOP wall of shame I dont believe any of the money came out of the budget.

  12. paulie March 9, 2011

Of course, that would require being allowed to advertise in some fashion.

Maybe we could make it a T-shirt or a door hanger if we are not allowed to place ads online (or anywhere else).

  13. paulie March 9, 2011

    Agreed.

I’d go for a Democratic Wall of Guilt, pointing out Obama’s continuation of Bush policies even when he had a Democratic Congress, next.

“I’m not 100% sure, but I am guessing that Mr. Starr is one of those people who thinks the concept is too negative and confrontational towards Republicans, whom he hopes we will win over by gentle and friendly persuasion. He can correct me if I’m guessing wrong here.

Dr. Phillies, on the other hand, usually relishes in rubbing Republicans’ noses in their mess, ”

me_we should e rubbing the noses of both the Dems and the GOP in their shame

  15. paulie March 9, 2011

For anyone reading who doesn’t know what we are talking about, see

    https://independentpoliticalreport.com/2011/03/libertarian-party-shall-we-spend-30k-for-republican-wall-of-shame-ad/

    And comments therein.

A donor contributed $10,000 and another $5,000 or more was raised so the LP can place an advertisement in the WaPo online edition of the “Republican wall of shame” which was successfully employed at CPAC. This is money that was specifically raised for this project. Very little of it, if any, would have come LPHQ’s way otherwise.

I’m not 100% sure, but I am guessing that Mr. Starr is one of those people who thinks the concept is too negative and confrontational towards Republicans, whom he hopes we will win over by gentle and friendly persuasion. He can correct me if I’m guessing wrong here.

Dr. Phillies, on the other hand, usually relishes in rubbing Republicans’ noses in their mess, but in this case he objects because one of the items on the wall can be (IMO, mis)interpreted as saying that the LP takes a position that there is no global warming problem being caused by humans, which he believes there obviously is.

So, for different reasons, (I think) they (probably) both oppose this ad being placed.

In order to accomplish that objective, they are arguing from the standpoint that the budget currently being operated under by the LNC – last year’s budget, since this year’s has not yet been approved – does not allow for advertising of any kind at all.

And furthermore, that if and when the budget in the article we are commenting on is passed, it won’t allow any advertising at all either. Even if the money falls in the LP’s lap.

  16. paulie March 9, 2011

It’s not obvious to me, and I hope there will be enough people on the LNC that won’t see it as being obvious either.

Tying ourselves in knots is…to borrow a Capozzi phrase…”contra-indicated.”

  17. paulie March 9, 2011

“Sounds pretty open ended…what am I missing?”

Advertising, which is not a promotional item.

Why not? Advertising is designed to promote. As for item, that can mean any tangible thing. Aren’t t-shirts, doorhangers, etc, designed to advertise, i.e., promote?

For that matter, “event.” I realize that an ad is not an event in the same sense as a convention is, but there is no convention this year, so if we are operating off a budget that includes a “convention and event” line, “event” can take on a new meaning (not an invented one – it’s under event in the dictionary).

  18. Robert Capozzi March 9, 2011

gp13, thanks for clearing that up. I hope someone’s working on a Plan B, a lease, preferably in more appropriate facilities. One could imagine the LNC “forced” to renew the Watergate lease should the building fund prove to be unworkable.

  19. George Phillies March 9, 2011

    @11

If you will settle for 1993, the party’s FEC reports are available on line.

  20. George Phillies March 9, 2011

The lease expires early next year. There is an effort to buy a building instead of signing a new lease.

  21. Robert Capozzi March 9, 2011

Around, that would be analytically weak, IMO. “Success” is not dependent on a single variable, including office rent. Prevailing political environments, staff fundraising skills, legal environment, changes in fundraising technologies, etc. might be as or more salient.

I assume that office rents are in “Administrative Costs 369,500.” Say that $300K is the rent piece. Say the Watergate is $30/sq ft. Say the lease is either cancellable or about to expire. Say alternative space is available at $15/sq ft.

Would $150K be worth moving? Probably. Would $150K in program spending lead to a step function growth in the LP? Unlikely. It might buy some legal challenges to ballot access laws. It might fund a nifty Internet ad program. It might fund a telemarketer or 2 or 3.

I’ll ask again: Does anyone know when the lease expires?

  22. AroundtheblockAFT March 9, 2011

Anyone have the 1991 budget? It would be interesting to see what the budget of twenty years ago, pre-Watergate, would be in 2011 dollars. It might be a good indicator of the Party’s success during those twenty years.

  23. Jerry S. March 9, 2011

Why don’t some of you good people buy some of this to help out. Yes share these links with anyone interested in buying and Distributing in their community! Now is the time to outreach in the neighborhoods.

“Sounds pretty open ended…what am I missing?”

Advertising, which is not a promotional item.

  25. Aaron Starr March 8, 2011

    Paulie,

The budget was amended at the July meeting to include money for brand development, specifically for promotional type items, such as door hangers.

  26. George Phillies March 8, 2011

@3 I believe that about the same question has also been raised by National Secretary Mattson. The short answer is ‘same numbers as last year’.

  27. paulie March 8, 2011

    That would be good.

  28. Michael H. Wilson March 8, 2011

Someone needs to provide some details as to what is meant by brand development and why 52K.

  29. David Colborne March 8, 2011

What’s truly revealing is that the LP is trying to maintain a national party on income that’s dwarfed by any single major party candidate’s war chest during a contested national election (HR, Senate, etc.). That the LP gets as much publicity as it does is a credit to the organization.

  30. George Phillies March 8, 2011

For the first month of the year, their Standard financial statement shows ca. 91,ooo in income (there is on the FEC report also the yearly bequest payment of near $30,000)

    The math is revealing.
